artao Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 I just bought this and BoS on the recent sale. Mostly I wanted to fly WW1 dogfights. (I thought I had to buy BoS to play FC .. only via Steam apparently) Upon getting into the game and flying around over no man's land, WOW! How utterly disappointing. Any time I get down low over NML it just breaks the immersion it looks so bad. The "craters" are entirely flat and the "trenches" are just black lines. Even the textures look low rez, and I've got the game on Ultra. WTF (I have the improved NML mod installed, but still .. meh) I've done quite a bit of searching and have found nothing regarding making the craters and trenches actually 3D. That saddens me. Is it simply not possible? Not possible just for modders but the devs could do it? Why the heck won't the devs do it? What a terrible choice, to make no man's land look so .. well ... crappy. Modern computers can totally deal with full 3D geometry and high rez textures. Even with the game being 3 yrs old now, computers when it was released could easily handle high res detailed no man's land. Very disappointing. Is there any hope for this to be fixed? For an $80usd game, it's pretty egregiously bad frankly. Not up to par at all with BoS. I'd go so far as to say it feels more like a mid-development map, for beta testing. And that's not to mention the utter emptiness of the battlefield. I was expecting to be strafing and bombing trenches and artillery and MG nests, trying to stop tanks and soldier charges. Dogfighting is fun and all, and well done .. But down low, doing other missions? ehhh. Not so great. I'm glad I got the game on sale for $27 rather than the full $80 price or I'd be a bit miffed. The planes are great but the map is just low quality. PLEASE tell me they're still updating FC.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 (edited) Technology limitation, height map limits. Resources limitation, not good investment revenues (niche product) etc. New map which be realised in the future will not change that unfortunately. The game engine has to be made from scratch I believe. This is years to come, enjoy what you have, good combat in the sky. We all stopped to complain long time ago. If they do earn and prosper maybe someday we will see 3d trenches and 3d craters. Game is developed, FC Vol 2 , 3 , collector planes and shared tech from ww2 . You'll have to turn mods off though. Edited March 14, 2022 by US103_Talbot 1
artao Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 I understand. Well that's a shame. Thanks. I need a LOT more practice before I try playing online. For one thing to stop ripping the wings off these old WW1 planes LOL

If you have basic engine management and plane controls (water radiator, mixture, throttle, fire weapons, and reload) then you can fly online. I highly recommend that you join the Jasta 5 Discord for voice communications, there are lots of people there who will be very happy to fly with you and teach you. I spent years flying offline only, but I learned more in my first few hours of online play with voice comms than in all the years before that.
artao Posted March 16, 2022 Author Posted March 16, 2022 I'm still on auto-engine/radiator/etc Nor can I yet beat AI regularly. And humans are WAY better. I'd prefer to come into online play not as a total noob but as a semi-accomplished pilot at the least. LOL Note that I have HUNDREDS and hundreds of hours in flight sims. I'm not a "noob" noob. Just to this game and, moreso, WW1 planes. These suckers can NOT handle high g-loads or heavy rudder action. SUPER maneuverable, but at the cost of "I might just suddenly fall out of the sky." I'm still coming to grips with the ww1 plane limitations over what I'm used to. But at least I've (mostly) stopped ripping the wings off the planes LOL. Now to stop spinning.
=IRFC=Gascan Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 If you want to fly MP at any point, then the sooner the better. With voice comms, other players can help you learn how to handle the WW1 machines, their strengths and weaknesses. I think it will help you get a more rewarding experience faster when you can fly with a wingman or two, find fights, and then someone can tell you what you did wrong when you get shot down so you can do better next time. I was reading about some ground attack missions flown by pilots during the Battle of Cambrai and later in 1918. It really struck me how often the authors mentioned seeing horse-drawn carts and columns of troops marching on the road. Diving down and strafing them or dropping cooper bombs really scattered the troops, causing casualties and significant damage to the enemy's ability to move supplies and reinforcements to the front. There were also times when the pilots attacked trenches. I imagine this may also be useful for the Tank Crew portion of the game. Hunting tanks is one thing, but tanks were also often used to assault fortified positions with infantry and artillery. I could imagine developing a trench asset that can fire rifles at nearby planes and vehicles. When hit by machine gun fire or a HE shell that "destroys" the asset, the troops inside run away just like the crew abandoning a vehicle that gets destroyed. The trench assets could be part of strong points that tankers could attack in SP campaigns, instead of just tanks and artillery that are dug in at a defensive position. It could also be used for specific ground attack missions in WW1, although I wouldn't use it for the front line generally (too resource intensive). You could also have a company or platoon of troops marching along a road. It would be similar to an AI truck that follows the road, but it can also cross open ground fairly well and will scatter troops when "destroyed". Mix up a couple of platoons of soldiers with some horse-drawn wagons and horse-drawn artillery, and you've got yourself a good convoy to attack (and it could be textured for both WW1 and WW2). I'm not gonna hold my breath since it would probably gonna take some significant development work, but it would add a lot to both wars.

Hopefully NML will improve (a bit) with the FC2 map releases coming soon, but actual 3D trenches/craters/PBI would be awesome. Meanwhile just look up. The clouds and sky are great and there's plenty of action up there.
