In the game the default skins is a specific paint scheme with national markings, but no codes. Then we have others with specific paint scheme with codes. In the future, with the custom code applications, will the choices for paint scheme be similar to how it was in Il-2 ‘46? For example, will we have a spitfire v with green/earth a, green/earth b, green/ocean, sand/stone and perhaps a few other historical paint schemes? Will these all have no codes or national markings until the user chooses the nation and applies codes almost like a decal system? Will there still be default skins with the current hard markings and codes available?

You can already see that on newer planes that have custom tactical markings like the P-51B it hast different '44 and '45 camos, US and British with no markings so they can be combined freely ;)

cliffs of dover blitz....  pick a plane to fly,  pick a paint pattern, and then choose a particular unit,  you get teh unit markings.. then you can put extra markings on it for flight leader, etc  you can actually get the correct markings for almost ANY german pilot that existed in the war

I can imagine that when some other very urgent things like drop tanks, the remaining planes to be delivered, and the map for BON is top priority. After BON comes out then we can expect some improvement on many aspects including the tactical markings and skins related to nationality. It was mentioned that due to how the skins where made in this sim the tactical codes lettering and numbering was not an easy task and to generalize it would require an important effort. I suppose at this point in time it is not on top of the priorities.

In the past they had to develop and improve only BOX, but today we have GB with BOX and  Flying Circus and Tank Crew, and all with the same requirement about the quality level. I always ask myself isn't this too much for a small team, even if some work is subcontracted. Up to now it seems that they handle it well which is fantastic.

I remember them saying this way back but now they have done it for some aircraft I assumed they could now apply it to earlier aircraft.  They originally said that they would need to almost throw away the old engine and start again from scratch to do it but they have obviously not done anything that drastic and if they had then all the aircraft  would have had to have been redone and had selectable  codes.  I am hoping that now they know how to do it using the existing engine then all they need to do is make some new default skins for every aircraft that are suitable for putting codes on. I can see that would not necessarily be a quick task but doable on a plane by plane basis.

Note that I said 'I am hoping..'  as I am not presuming to know how it really works and how difficult it will be to apply to all aircraft.  If they need to rebuild each aircraft from the ground up then we will never see them all done ?

Recently I’ve been working on a mod that implements a set of “default” looking skins that include the unit tail and nose markings along with any badges for all the VVS units in the Kuban career mode.

There’s still no individual aircraft numbers present but the different camo variations and markings make for better variety and allow you to ID individual units.

The only downside is that the mod replaces pre-existing official skins in order to work so those won’t be available while it’s activated.

I’ve only done it for Kuban so far and I’m still putting the last few touches on it but if anyone is interested I might upload it somewhere.
