Getting shot down....

If behind enemy lines, does anyone ever get back? Or should one 'fly till ya die'? Career is over either way.

Hard for me to say with any certainty.

I do know that I have bailed out/force landed a short distance behind enemy lines and not been captured. This doesn't happen often (that is, going down behind enemy lines, since it's something I go out of my way to avoid; outright death is more commonplace), so it's difficult to form conclusions from a breadth of experience.

If I had to guess, I'd say there's some variability involved, maybe depending on how far from the frontline you are.

It's possible that my experience was some kind of fluke and not the result of a randomized capture/escape feature.

The only way to really test it would be to start up a career in Stalingrad or Moscow (short distance from takeoff to frontline), and repeatedly land behind enemy lines and restart missions, just to see what happens.

I have seen servers that try to decide what your chances are of getting back to your lines on foot and resuming your career. I have also seen servers that decide that bailing 100m over enemy lines is the same as being dead.  If the latter bothers you then it is up to you decide if fighting to the death when you could bail out and survive is realistic or even if your care about realism.  If you care about the points then many servers allow you to keep more of your earned points if you live than if you die.

When a mission is built, there is an influence area that can be defined for each faction.  If you bail out or ditch in the enemy influence area, you'll be captured.  The individual designing the mission can make the influence areas whatever size and location they choose - some might be perfectly aligned with the front, some leave a buffer along the front, or they could be completely absent.

I've only been captured when bailing out behind enemy lines, but I'd like to think I could make it back to base. The game doesn't seem to think so. ?

To make it back you have to blast the main theme of "the great escape" on full volume during the loading screen after ending the mission!

Yes, there is an algorithm that determines this which depends on a lot of factors.

Build yourself a "escape capture" mission in arma 3 using iron front assets.

When shot down in great battles behind ennemy lines, immediately after hitting the silk press pause/end mission.

Play your arma escape.

If you don't succeed to escape, delete your career in great battles.
