Avetorro-VR Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 I just purchased a few of the ground vehicles for a bit of a change from being in the air all the time. But on expert servers, or those that don’t show where you are on the map, I have no idea where I am or what direction I’m going in after spawning. Is there any help for this issue. In an aircraft you can see landmarks but not in a vehicle. Does the commander or driver come with a compass in their pocket?
56RAF_Roblex Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 Well you know where you started from and you know what road you are on which is as good as any driver gets.

No, when you spawn you sometimes are just on a grassed area near a base or airfield. You have no idea which direction anything is from your position. At a top speed of 50kph (on solid ground) it takes a long time to get anywhere and your fuel tank isn’t limitless. No military personnel would be out without at least a map and compass. 1
56RAF_Roblex Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 I will agree that it is not usual in real life to appear on a base without some idea if what side of the base you are on but we do have a map and before GPS most civilian drivers navigated using maps and didn't have a compass. I don't often drive ground vehicles; do they not have on-screen compasses?

Being an ex delivery driver from pre gps days myself I am very well versed in the art of navigating with a map, a detailed map with road names etc. The map in the game only shows very limited detail. It’s no big deal. I will just stick to playing my own missions .... but just in case any one wondered why there’s maybe a lack of player ground vehicles in multiplayer games, this might be the reason.
56RAF_Roblex Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 I used to play WW2-Online and in that you could run around the whole of Belgium as a soldier or drive tanks or trucks as well as fly and there were no street names anywhere but, it has been a while, I suspect there may have been some sort of GPS marker.

I know that in England we removed all road names in WWII....which is all the more reason a military driver would carry a compass.
Avetorro-VR Posted March 2, 2022 Author Posted March 2, 2022 But to be honest if you look at the prokhorovka tank map it is a lot smaller and has a lot more detail as it is specifically made for vehicles since the travelling speed is a lot less than aircraft. I haven’t tried that as I have a mobile AA gun and I don’t think there are aircraft in that battle game. 20mm isn’t much use against tanks.
moustache Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 what is needed is a more precise grid system when you are in a tank (this plane is much too wide for tanks... do like the one on the TC map), with a compass (there is has a compass in the HUD, but a "physical" compass would be a plus for immersion...) and the possibility of using different tools (compass, measure...) and annotating on the map (a much like on ARMA 3...) it would be really good for the immersion and the simulation side of TC, especially since in reality, navigation, both in the air and on land, is a very important part of combat strategy... but hey, let's not get too carried away... 1
Yogiflight Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 (edited) @drogo-joystick the German tanks have a direction device for the driver, which shows the direction in clock time, not in degrees. It is left above the driver. As a help, when using the AA vehicles, look where the sun is, then you can find the rough direction, when you know the daytime the map has. Look for a hill, which will give you a better view from its top. But be careful, that there is no oponent around. But mainly write to the admin of the MP server, to make clear, where the starting points for ground vehicles are. Edited March 2, 2022 by Yogiflight 1

I could also look at the trees and see which side of the trunk has moss on but if I’m told to head 5 km south I’d normally use a compass. I can’t believe AA gunners didn’t carry one to find their way about. I’m not in a tank so I don’t really know what’s available to them fir navigation, but there’s nothing in my HUD that looks like a compass in expert servers.
jollyjack Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 No body seems to mention pressing O for the fullscreen map and the black arrow pointing where you're headed?. Or pressing M for that matter ..

Or pressing M for that matter .. No because in expert servers like Finnish one you have no marker. But guess what? Problem solved. I played the game on my pc instead of vr one day and have now discovered the fuzzy object on the left of the hud is actually a compass. The letters were too small to render clearly and I thought it was just some engine status icon or something to do with the gun movement. I honestly can’t see the NEWS marked around it Yet no one could tell me that
