VR BETA now available on STEAM for registered testers

I see not 1 valid reason why they should not open up the beta to each and every customer by now .. VR users or pancake. If they simply put a huge Red disclaimer on the very first menu screen with a bold warning this being a WIP...!?

A closed beta for over 1 year!???

But it is their call, their decision of course.

ChatGpt's take:

Manfred von Richthofen: "Ah, Herr Bader, good to see you again. What brings you to this virtual battlefield today?"

Douglas Bader: "Well, Baron, I was hoping to finally experience the thrill of flying in virtual reality in IL-2 Cliffs of Dover. But alas, we're still waiting for that functionality to be added."

Manfred von Richthofen: "Ja, I hear your frustration. I myself have been waiting for what feels like an eternity. Perhaps we should go on a real dogfight instead."

Douglas Bader: "Oh, I see how it is. You're afraid I'll beat you in virtual combat, so you're suggesting we take it to the skies for real."

Manfred von Richthofen: "Ha! You're a witty one, Bader. But let's be honest, we both know the only dogfighting we'll be doing anytime soon is in the virtual world."

Douglas Bader: "True enough, Baron. But until then, I suppose we'll just have to keep waiting. And complaining about it, of course."

Manfred von Richthofen: "Naturally. What else is there to do when we're stuck in the ground?"

Yes, and we continue to make excellent progress in the implementation of all the elements which are a part of the Beta.

Those include, not just the VR Implementation, but also the implementation of trueSKY, Speedtree 8/9, 4k terrain graphics, 4k aircraft graphics, extended player distance view of objects, (up to 10 times the existing view distance in current release) etc.

These improvements will be released as a complete package... we will not release them separately... which is why it is taking some time.

As I have said previously... these chances will result in a completely new look for the game... a revolution in its appearance.

These IL-2 forums need more screenshots so that it is clear that the end is near and that Bruce Willis will be hired again.

Just a general comment that I presume still applies...

Their is a non disclosure agreement for CLOD Beta testers.

Not sure that making sarcastic comments help motivate any one.....

Yes, am well aware of the elapsed time.

There also scope for beta testers to post stuff if they ask for permission as J-HAT and Gunfreak did. That more dont or havent is a different matter.

oh- and lets not forget TFS themselves

Theres nothing sarcastic intended in the comment but i can see why it could be taken that way so fair play. My badly made point is that if nothing is available for TFS or betas to show whether through development or embargo issues there is nothing to be shown. If there is something to be shown TFS will/would no doubt show it/allow testers to showcase it. Asking for stuff that would clearly be shouted from the rooftops without prompting if it were available is simply focussing folk on the perceived issues surrounding the present absence of visible momentum.

I think the original dose of sarcasm was not injected by Boo in this latest exchange.

I suspect that Dagwoods screenshot was actually in response to my post here

I think by now we know you won't back down or change the approach, it's all or nothing. But is anything actually ready to release anyway?

VR - nope

True sky- ?

Speedtree - nope

4k graphics - maybe ( these might have been ready quite some time?)

Extended player view distance - ?

Saying that releasing it all together is what's taking time is somewhat disingenuous. Clearly what is taking time is your inability to actually do what you've promised. It's a capability problem, not a volume problem.

pointing out that the 4k graphics were "90% and complete except a few bomber types", and the extended player view distance was complete back in 2022. Thank goodness Buzzsaw stuck to his guns about releasing all or nothing.

Hi,

you, and anybody else who is interested, can go here for more information and example videos -

It requires a registration there.

NOTE:  VR Beta Participant posting without permission.  Warning issued.

...and access to non-public section of the forum - for beta testers only I presume? I'm registered and I can't access that thread. Not complaining, just clearing things up.

Telling !

If there is no reason to "hide" (or simply nothing to show at all ???) then why all that secrecy !?

Why not allow everyone to use these BETA versions showing, if necessary, an additional big disclaimer like "this is not the final version".

I know of many closed ALFA versions of softwares, but CLOSED BETA versions ... for 40 USD games ???

In light of the new beta release, will TFS now be reviewing those requests to join the beta that have been made over the past few months?

An open/public beta is unlikely. That could lead to complaints of game crashes and/or poor performance with demand for fixes. In the "private" beta participants cannot register complaints publicly so there is breathing room for the Team to mitigate at a pace the Team can manage. A "public" beta is tantamount to a "release" since a poor reception could depress DW-T sales even while Steam stats improved.

so you can access the BoX (a 40USD game) tester forum and the updates therein can you without being a tester?

CLOD Tobruk is different. After all this time... Years... for new features, not new modules/theatres !

I dont see how Clod is different to any other game running a closed beta. Even DCS with is general access public beta has a closed beta and likely further layers of betas behind that. Mainly for "features" too I hasten to add.  TBH having read (and indeed written) some of the ballcocks out there, keeping the beta pool small is probably a good thing.

I have read what Buzzsaw just wrote and now I think I understand ... 85 % completion is not BETA, but more like ALPHA and then

closed 'team' testing is even necessary.

At least we now know for sure that asking for (VR) access and/or hope it will all be ready and delivered, say, in "2 weeks" is ... off the table !

ED seems to be running several internal test versions  they had worked on multithreading for like 2 years before they now released it as an optional thing in the open beta

We will add new testers when we feel we have something more finalized to test.
