Mysticpuma Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Pretty sure it can't be done normally but if a player had a generic skin (say an unnumbered Checkertail skin), that could be added to static aircraft that would make a big difference to the realisim? Is there a mod already or if not, is this possible?
jollyjack Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Me thinks you'll need to dive into editing the textures of various objects.
Stonehouse Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 The files to modify are in the graphics gtp files and resolves to dds files from data\graphics\blocks\textures. eg of file is !fw190a8.dds There is a static historically correct german aircraft mod floating around plus also I know from helping with the Tunisia/Nth Africa mod that Rob redid static aircraft to have a desert look. I'd have to check but from memory there are two places he had to change things. ..................ok checking back through PMs between us it seems like it's planes.dds, planes_su.dds, planes2.dds , planes2_su.dds, planes2_dmg.dds and planes2_dmg_su.dds as well as the specific ones for individual aircraft as mentioned above in the fw190 example.

Thanks, so if P51's and P-38's were on an airbase, each static model could have its own generic skin? (wouldn't want them all to have the number 60 on the side, but if it had a Checkertail marking only....that could be done?) Just clarifying, cheers.
Stonehouse Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 (edited) That's how I understand it works. If you look in the contents of the Nth Africa mod you'll see that Rob retextured a large number of static aircraft for both Allied and Axis to make them fit the Tunisian theme. You'll see the dds files in data\graphics\blocks\textures within the mod. It was the same with the Static historically correct German aircraft mod in that the author altered the skin to make each have historically correct national markings. Other than the technical difficulty of getting the skinning done that might be involved I can't see the difference between checkertail markings and desert camo or correct national marking. -=[]=-little-Guardian Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I once tried to make custom skins for the parked Thunderbolts, but the Alpha channel is weird. It seems to be different to the alpha used in the skins for the flyable planes. Changing the alpha only a little bit messed up the visual a lot. But if you don't want to work on the alpha, yes it is absolutely possible.
LizLemon Posted March 10, 2022 Posted March 10, 2022 Static planes use a different shader than normal aircraft, that is why the alpha is different.
Majpalmer Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 There is a static mod for Rise of Flight. I suppose it can be done.
Vamandrac Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 I know one of the mods that adds swastikas to the game included files to put them on static aircraft so it is possible.
jollyjack Posted March 20, 2022 Posted March 20, 2022 I did it; you've got to extract the corresponding GTP textures. Only if you change a skin, all statics for the same object will change into that IMO .. 1
