Individual Mission-related Performance Charts being added to 'Basics' missions

I'm in the process of adding an extra OpenKneeboard plate to each of the recent 'Basics' missions series, giving a helpful 1st-hand access to the performances of all likely fighter aircraft for a given particular mission, along with  a visual altitude for certain secondary 'dogfight' and 'CAP' objectives.

I can take no credit at all in the actual 'data'. This goes to the dedicated hard work of this forum's very own 'CountZero'

The below plate has already been included into the Bf 109 G-4 Basics mission (new link below) and others to follow.

Bf 109 G-4 Basics (with OpenKneeboard Plates)

Overview:
Rather pleased with the outcome of this particular mission. I've tried to make these training missions highly replayable with the use of random switches.

Almost everything within this flight is randomised and no 2 play-throughs will be the same. Ground objectives, targets, types, air encounters, even the airfield traffic and the aircraft formation flyovers at mission start are randomised, along with random chances of an airfield attack by either air or ground forces.

This download comes with a highly detailed 14-page PDF mission guide, a step-by-step openkneeboard setup PDF guide and detailed kneeboard reference plates based on the Bf 109 G-4.
Designed to either help you get used to the specific aircraft or as a simple refresher. Each training mission will include a primary objective as well as numerous secondary objectives will will be in the form of both ground AND air.
A wingman or flight will usually fly alongside you (and as you will be 'flight lead', this will give you practice in issuing orders, formations etc).

This mission has been designed with 'random' encounters at every step. Even the mission start airfield vehicles, German flyovers, refuel & rearm trucks, all random, in an attempt to make the mission high replayable.
Objective encounters will be random in aircraft types, convoy types, the number of that same aircraft within the flight, starting direction & height etc.

Whilst these missions have been designed and created for VR, they do work perfectly well in 2D.

Being a training mission, fully detailed plates are included & will display at mission start but they will rapid & brief and there is no way of bringing this info up in-sim as & when is needed so I am using the AMAZING free software OPENKNEEBOARD that works wonderfully with IL-2.
I have created a step-by-step pdf & have also included the plates from this mission, should you wish to use them in OpenKneeboard.

This Mission:

You are Eagle Lead, flying the latest Bf 109 G-4, with your airfield positioned at Anapa in the Kuban region.
It is the Spring of 1943.
Primary Objective: Simply to land safely back onto the airfield.
Secondary Objective 1: Air encounter at low to mid altitude with a single random Russian fighter.
Secondary Objective 2: Air encounter at mid to high altitude with a random number of a random flight of Russian fighters.
Secondary Objective 3: Destroy a Random Russian Convoy type. There is a 1-in-4 chance that the convoy will have air support from a random type of Russian fighter.
Secondary Objective 4: Protect our Panzer division from Russian ground attack aircraft as they strive to fight for the town of Glebovka.
Secondary Objective 5: Take out the AAA at the Russian airfield of Kyivskoe so that out Bombers may render the base inoperable. There is a 3-in-4 chance of a random Russian fighter type attempting to scramble off the field.

Note: There is also a 2-in-4 chance of a an airfield attack at mission start by air or artillery.

To Install:

Place the 'HSHawk SP Missions' Folder into your default 'Missions' folder.
An example of the correct path
IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Kuban Map > Bf109G-4_Basics

Requirements:

Ensure the Hud is enabled ('H') for onscreen plates and messages. Make sure that the 'Show HUD by default' box is 'checked' in Flight Interface settings ingame.

Advisories and known issues:

Press 'H' (Show/Hide HUD) if you no longer wish to have the tutorial plates obstructing your view but remember to turn the HUD back on to receive onscreen messages etc.

There is an option within the mission to bring along 2 wingmen & this can be achieved by either firing a flare at mission start or at any time within 10km of the airfield but in order to have them follow, you MUST taxi over (therefore triggering) the white 'X' taxi node. These nodes are invisible but the 1st one is placed on the ground in front of you.

If you're not under attack, when entering onto the runway, slowly roll down to position a little way down & look for the green take off flare from the tower on the left. You're then good to go.
If Eagles TWO and THREE are along with you, it's advisable to take off and make a slow circuit of the airfield to give them chance to join up on you. They're set to default to a right-edge formation and; like you, they'r earmed with 4 SC 50 bombs.

Also, with the A.I. limitations of the sim, other taxiing aircraft and vehicles will NOT stop for A.I. in a different flight so best let any potential hazard go past before you have your wingmen follow you out to the field.

It is mid Autumn 1941.
Primary Objective: Simply to land safely back onto the airfield.
Secondary Objective 1: Air encounter at low to mid altitude with a single random Russian fighter.
Secondary Objective 2: Air encounter at mid to high altitude with a random number of a random flight of Russian fighters.
Secondary Objective 3: Destroy Anti Aircraft Gun emplacements around the perimeter of the Russian airfield of Lykshyino; some 53km north-east of your airfield so that our medium bombers may later put that field out of action.
Go in low and strike fast and watch for any fighters that get to scramble.
Secondary Objective 4: Destroy a Russian supply train, as it heads west to the town of Detchino where it's believed it will rearm and replenish Russian troops and armour.
Secondary Objective 5: Destroy a Russian Artillery battery as it pounds our engineers busy trying to repair a key bridge north of Slyadnevo.

Hawkinge Combat Air Patrol Training Flight

Hawkinge, Kent. July 1940

Updated Oct 2022 for compatibility with 5.001

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l0v5cddul0vlbko/Hawkinge CAP Training Flight.rar?dl=0

title.jpg

Overview:

As a promising up and coming Polish Fighter pilot, you've been assigned to RAF Goshawk Squadron, flying Hurricanes.
Both yourself and a fellow countryman are part of a 3-ship combat air patrol training flight this morning with Squadron leader 'Buzzard' Stevens.
This is the real thing gentlemen. This is what you've been training for.
The flight is codenamed 'Rabbit' and you are flying as 'Rabbit' THREE.
Rabbit Lead will be issuing orders and giving out advice throughout the flight. Be sure to listen. Stick close to him at all times (with the exception of landing. Currently the AI are reluctant to land so when it comes to returning back to Hawkinge, fly solo whilst heeding his advice) ... Good luck gentlemen.

Advisories:

The mission uses many custom audio files. Be sure to turn down the ingame radio chat by pressing Left Control + NumPad minus at mission start so that the leader may be heard.
Plates will appear on screen to accompany audio; sometimes at delicate times like take off etc but they are semi-opaque to help you.

Due to the limitions of the editor, some audio files 'may' overlap if 'you' are in too much of a rush (taxiing and landing for example).

Notes:

When Rabbit LEAD and Rabbit TWO pull out of parking, you have the option of following and staying on-mission or staying put and firing a flare (Left Control + 1 then click LMB). This will initiate a three and a half minute Hurricane Cockpit Familiarisation presentation.
Similarly you can stray off-mission, and fly north over Cantebury to initiate a helpful five minute presentation on Hurricane Flight, Engine Management and Primary Instrument Basics. It would be a good idea to engage Autopilot Level Flight for this (Left Shift + A) or at least trim the airplane with sufficient height.
RABBIT LEAD will give out engine power settings and remember that these are 'guidelines' only. To stay with the formation, you should be constantly moving throttle controls back and forth as well as closing the radiator for extra speed etc.
Guildeline power settings used are:
Climb: +9 Boost - 2850 RPM
Cruise: +7 Boost - 2650 RPM
VERY IMPORTANT: ALWAYS power Up with RPM first, then Boost and ALWAYS power down with Boost first, then RPM!

To Install:

The zip is JSGME compatible but if you'd like to install manually, follow the instructions below.

Place the 'HSHawk SP Missions' Folder into your default 'Missions' folder.
An example of the correct path should be ...
IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Normandy Map > Battle of Britain > Hawkinge CAP Training Flight

If you'd like to use Raptorattacker & sammydee's excellent custom skins, place the HurricaneMkII & U2VS folders here: IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles -> data -> graphics -> Skins

Requirements:

Battle of Normandy (map)
Hurricane Mk.II (Collector Plane)
Ensure the Hud is enabled ('H') for onscreen plates and messages. Make sure that the 'Show HUD by default' box is 'checked' in Flight Interface settings ingame.

Press 'H' (Show/Hide HUD) if you no longer wish to have the tutorial plates obstructing your view but remember to turn the HUD back on to receive onscreen messages etc.

This mission is not intending to portray historical correctness.

Overview:

Practice Mission - P-51B Mustang
Welcome to RAF 19 Squadron. Welcome to Grimbergen, Belgium. You are Rabbit Leader, commanding a 4-ship Mustang flight on today's errands.
Tasks are varied and encounters are random so no repeat play through will be the same.
There is even a random chance that your training flight could start with an immiment Luftwaffe fighter attack.

Objectives include teaming up with fellow Mustangs from Angel flight in the providing of fighter cover for 8 RAF B-25D Mitchell Bombers, codenamed Dogrose, as they attempt to carry a bombing sortie of Bierset airfield.
Other objectives include Combat Air Patrol sorties of which there are 2 hotspots on the map. Encounters will be random in both aircraft type as well as numbers and altitude.
There is also a ground attack objective area which will again, spawn a random target type.

At the mission start, after the intro, you will have the option to view a 62-plate colour illustrative cockpit familiarity guide by firing off a flare from your cockpit.

To Install:

The download is JSGME compatible and is the easiest way of installation but if you wish to install manually, follow the instructions below.

Place the 'HSHawk SP Missions' Folder into your default 'Missions' folder.
An example of the correct path:

IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Rheinland Map > Practice Mission - P-51B Mustang

(and the media folder: IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Rheinland Map > Practice Mission - P-51B Mustang media).

Skins: IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > graphics > skins > P51B5

Requirements:

Battle of Bodenplatte (map)
Battle of Normandy (P-51B/C Mustang)

Ensure the Hud is enabled ('H') for onscreen plates and messages. Make sure that the 'Show HUD by default' box is 'checked' in Flight Interface settings ingame.

Advisories and known issues:

Press 'H' (Show/Hide HUD) if you no longer wish to have the tutorial plates obstructing your view but remember to turn the HUD back on to receive onscreen messages etc.

There are no coordinates or shoutouts when ground & air targets have been spotted, due to the random nature. An easy get around is to issue orders to your wingmen and follow them in.

Overview:

Practice Mission - Bristol Fighter F2B

May 19418. Welcome to France. Temporary home to 11 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps.
You are Charlie Leader, commanding a 5-ship Brisfit flight on today's errands.
Your mission will be random in encounters, even down to your primary bombing objective so your play throughs will be a different experience each time.
It's a training mission. Targets are a-plenty. Fly it your way.

Should you wish to tackle the primary objective, fly east over the front, into enemy territory towards the city of Douai. Nearing the waypoint, you'll be told of your objective which will be a bombing sortie and you are equipped at mission start with 4 112 pound Mk.II Herl bombs.

A secondary objective is to assist in the escorting of 6 Bombers as they head deep into enemy territory. The Handley page 0-400's of 'Wagon' flight are tasked with the bombing of a rural target, thought to be an enemy muntions stock pile for the front line.
4 Sopwith Camels of 'Acorn' flight will provide the primary air cover.
your munitions will come in handy in the very likey event that the target is defended with anti aircraft guns. The target is perilously close to Central Powers airfields and so air threats will be high. Help out the Camels if you can.

There is also an area over the front, near Lens, which will provide random enemy air encounters and there is even a small random threat of an immiment attack of your airfield and its Observation Balloons.

At the mission start, after the intro, you will have the option to view a 48-plate colour illustrative cockpit familiarity guide by firing off a flare from your cockpit.

To Install:

The download contains five 11 squadron F2B skins, made by 'US93_larner' and is JSGME compatible and is the easiest way of installation but if you wish to install manually, follow the instructions below.

You are equipped with 6 bombs at mission start.

Overview:

Practice Mission - A-20B Havoc
Welcome to the DB-7 Boston (A-20B Havoc) Training Mission. Primary and secondary ground objectives are available, as well as air to air skirmishes with the Luftwaffe. You are callsigned as 'Hydro Leader'. 'Hydro' 2 and 3 make up your 3-ship flight.
Your primary objective is a trio of German Armed Cargo Tankers that have been spotted making a break up the Sound, for the safety of the North Sea. Using low mast height skip bombing attacks to avoid shoreline and shipping flak, sink these Tankers.
Secondary objectives include an Armoured column, Artillery teams and a supply Convoy. Air threats will be numerous.
Tennis Flight are readying up to leave at mission start, on a bombing run of a German Fighter/Bomber Airfield 20 miles to the south. Put their main runway (north of the airbase) out of action and expect heavy flak as well as fighter aircraft scrambling to meet your attack.
4 Spitfire Mk.V's of 'Suncup' Flight will be your fighter support and they'll be circling you at 'Angels 6' when your flight get airborne.
Dotted strategically around the airbase are parking points which, when entered, will trigger a series of helpful A-20B specific tutorials when a flare is fired.
Tutorials available are - Cockpit Familiaristion, Level Bombing, Skip Bombing and Level Bombing (detailed).
Refueling/Rearming/Repairing is available onbase. The trucks are parked in near the control tower but the rearm/refuel radius is large enough to encompass 'most' of the base. Remember to switch engine off first.

To Install:

Place the 'HSHawk SP Missions' Folder into your default 'Missions' folder.
An example of the correct path
IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles > data > Missions > HSHawk SP Missions > Rheinland Map > Practice Mission - A-20B HavocI

If you'd like to use the custom cockpit notes photo, place the 'custom_photo_dds' here: IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles -> data -> graphics -> Planes -> A20B -> Textures

Requirements:

Battle of Bodenplatte (map)
Battle of Kuban (A-20B Havoc)
Ensure the Hud is enabled ('H') for onscreen plates and messages. Make sure that the 'Show HUD by default' box is 'checked' in Flight Interface settings ingame.

Advisories and known issues:
When viewing the tutorial presentations with audio, close the canopy and if the engine is already running, turn down the radio volume (Left Alt + Numpad Subtract)
Bear in mind that the A.I. in IL-2 is woeful so if another flight is taxiing out, wait for them to go. If not they will be constantly crashing into your wingman/flight.

Overview:

Practice Mission - Typhoon Mk.1B
Welcome to the Typhoon Mk.1B Practice Mission. Primary and secondary ground objectives are available, as well as air to air skirmishes with the Luftwaffe. You are callsigned as 'Filmstar Leader' and 'Filmstar 2' will fly as your wingman. 'Filmstar 3' is on a solo sortie and his departure is immediate.
Your primary objective is the rail bridge, crossing the Albert Canal, 15 and a half miles to the east. Take out this bridge. The nearby road bridge would certainly make a good secondary target if ordnance allows.
Secondary objectives include German troop and supply trains, German heavy armoured units, Artillery teams and supply convoys. You will also be required to perform Fighter Sweeps in 'hot spots' around the coast to the north-west of our currently posted airfield.
Baffin Pair are readying up to leave within 8 mins, on a routine fighter sweep to the south so you can hook up with them to help them out if you so wish.
Refueling/Rearming/Repairing is available onbase. The trucks are parked in near the control tower but the rearm/refuel radius is large enough to encompass 'most' of the base. Remember to switch engine off first.
Before startup, you have the option of viewing a Cockpit Familiarisation presentation and startup, narrated by 'Requiem' of the Air Combat Tutorial Library. Initiate this by firing a flare out of the cockpit.
If you need to dust up on ground attack, taxi over to the 'No-Go' sign infront of the Ambulance trucks and fire a flare.

Practice Mission - Hurricane Mk.II

Updated Oct 2022 for compatibility with 5.001

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7jcaqlfpvgaj6fg/Practice Mission - Hurricane Mk.II.rar?dl=0

image1.jpg

Overview:
I fly Allied, predominantly RAF and I fly in VR. As incredible and immersive as VR is, it does obviously have its downsides. Reading notes, watching tutorials etc all have to be done 'outside' of Virtual Reality. But not any more.
I've aimed to create aircraft specific Sandbox-like Training Missions that are aimed to be a seen as a massive improvement over the default ingame 'Quick Mission'

Each aircraft-specific mission will also have another flight with their own mission, giving you the option to formate on them and help them out as well as completing the on-map objectives in your time and order.

Each mission contains specifically created colour tutorials which are narrated by'REQUIEM' and taken from his exellent and informative 'Air Combat Tutorial Library' Youtube videos.
These tutorial presentations have been designed to activate from a flare fired in the cockpit, when the pilot has taxied to a specifically instructed point.

Onscreen messages will frequently appear onscreen, informing you of the status of fellow pilots etc.

Music audio clips have been included at various stages to help heighten atmosphere and ambience.

Important Take Off checklist and Aircraft Limitation plates will briefly appear as you line up on the runway, waiting for your wingman, flight and in some cases, the Aircraft Limitations plate has been made into a DDS file, giving you the option to use it in-cockpit inplace of the default cockpit photo. Take off and Landing Checklists as well as Pilots Notes and Aircraft Limitation information can also be found on the inflight map screen ('M')

Whilst these missions have been designed and created for VR, they do work perfectly well in 2D.

This Mission:

Practice Mission - Hurricane Mk.II
Welcome to the Hurricane Mk.II Practice Mission. Primary and secondary ground objectives are available, as well as air to air skirmishes with the Luftwaffe. You are callsigned as 'Pansy Leader' and 'Pansy 2' will fly as your wingman. 'Pansy 3' is on a solo sortie and his departure is immediate.
Your primary objective is a German Ammo Supply Convoy on the move south, 13 miles north of our airbase. It's believed that they're carrying supplies for nearby StuG Assault Gun Tanks.
Secondary objectives include the StuGs previously mentioned, German Artillery units and you will also be required to perform Fighter Sweeps in 'hot spots' around the coast.
Acorn Flight are readying up to leave within 8 mins, on a routine fighter sweep to the north-west so you can hook up with them to help them out if you so wish.
Refueling/Rearming/Repairing is available onbase. The trucks are parked in near the control tower but the rearm/refuel radius is large enough to encompass 'most' of the base. Remember to switch engine off first.

Seems like a lot of effort were put into these missions, both in the mission design and presentation.
I will be sure to check them out soon.
Thanks a lot for your work!

I tried the P-38 mission last night. WOW! I wasn't expecting this! The music, the slides while you start up the plane, the general ambience with the traffic around the base... It made me realise these are the kind of small things games used to have in the old days of Microprose and all, and we have somehow lost on the way.  Brilliant stuff!

Now... There was a small problem and I couldn't see any enemies when I reached the target waypoint, despite the message saying something like "Enemy spotted". Could it be because I had to re-save the mission to make it compatible with the latest build of the game?

I'll try a few of these missions again when I get a chance. can't wait. Really nice stuff!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. To me, ambience and atmosphere is everything. Sometimes they're not easy to spot when you get to the engagement zone so here's a trick to try. When you get inside a ground target zone, give your wingmen the command to "attack nearest ground target" (I'm not familiar with the key binding as I use Voice Attack and speak to them instead). Then just simply follow them to the targets. Same with the air combat zones but give them the "Attack nearest Air Target" command.

Hope this helps and thank you for the feedback Haddock :)

These look great, but it just sits on "description loading". Do they need an update?

Hi. Every time 1C updates the game with a major update, all custom missions, saved flight record tracks, custom campaigns etc have to be 'resaved' from within the mission editor. It's quite easy to do ...

Open the editor (can be found in IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles -> bin -> editor -> STEditor.exe)

Onced in the editor, select from the tabs along the top; Tools -> Resave All Missions in Folder, then browse to your Missions folder (in this case: IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles -> data -> Missions, click on the HSHawk SP Missions folder then select OK).

It'll take a few minutes but afterwards the missions should work for you once again. You usually have to do this for custom missions and campaigns after any major update.

**edit** I've now actually resaved & updated all download links so they should all be compatible & correct as of 5.001 (Oct 2nd 2022).

New mission added:

15.09.2023 - Bf 109 E-7 Basics

15.09.2023 - Bf 109 F-2 Basics

14.09.2023 - Bf 109 G-2 Basics

Mission updated with improved objectives and better triggers.

14.09.2023 - Bf 109 F-4 Basics

A new training series with the excellent OpenKneeboard in mind. Being only a VR user to both IL-2 & DCS, I personally find an in-headset kneeboard an absolute necessity; a place that can show me my control mappings, cockpit guides, recommended engine settings etc, just by glancing down slightly.

I used to use the brilliant VR Enhancer but recently changing from SteamVR to OpenXR, VR Enhancer seems to conflict with the latter & stops it from operating so this is when I happened upon OpenKneeboard.

It's free, easy to use & it works flawlessly with IL-2 Great Battles. It intuitively remains open in your virtual lap & grows to full size only when you glance down (glance back up & it shrinks back out of the way once again).

These new 'Basics'  missions will each come with the aircraft-specific set of OpenKneeboard plates should you wish to use them; as well as an easy to follow step-by-step guide for OpenKneeboard but you can use these missions just as well without needing OpenKneeboard. (The plates will momentarily display at mission-start as a brief slideshow but obviously with a kneeboard function, they will be there for your perusual as & when throughout the flight).

New mission added:

01.10.2023 - Bf 109 G-4 Basics

I'm very happy indeed with the turn-out of this particular mission.

New OpenKneeboard plate being added to each Mission-based OpenKneeboard plates folder, showing direct maximum speed performance data by altitude for each fighter aircraft within that one particular mission. Data credits go completely to CountZero.

Bf 109 G-4 Basics Mission already updated. Others to follow.
