An Alternative Idea for a PTO Expansion

Jason has said in the past that they have enough data to do a Zero, but not really enough for a full 5 x 5 set.  What if PTO content was marketed as a different type of expansion?  Not the usual 5 x 5 Great Battle, but something smaller and more focused.  IL-2 Carrier Strikes vol. x

 

The idea is to have each package contain one IJN Zero model and maybe another AI only IJN aircraft or two, along with 3-5 Allied carrier aircraft.  Along with that would be one or two carriers that can be used by players for takeoff and landing.  Finally, the expansions would contain two or three small maps.  Here’s an example:

 

In late 1943 and early 1944 the US Navy’s new fast carrier force carried out a number of raids on places like Wake, Rabaul, Kwajalein, and Truk.  Three of those are tiny atolls and islands largely surrounded by empty ocean.  For instance all of Truk atoll could fit into a 80x80km map.   A simple plane set of A6M model 22 vs F6F-3, SBD-5 and TBM, with the USS Essex modeled as the carrier.  This should allow for a short but intense campaign for either side complete with some beautiful scenery.

In theory up to 5 of these smaller packages could be developed focused around the various Zero models, 21, 22, 32, 52, A6M2-N, and you could even do an MTO flavor with FAA aircraft matched against a period Italian fighter (Skua, Swordfish, Sea Hurricane vs CR42 etc).

This is a great idea. Make a small historic atolls and islands and make them and the carriers good.
