What is the collector Vehicle GAZ MM 72K slope climbing performance compared to the ZIS 72K.

We have two vehicles that are similar in the sense that they are open trucks with a 72K AA gun mounted on them.

The collector vehicle wich you can drive is really an excellent simulation with a lot of details and effects. I hope we will have more of these.

However I noticed a dynamic behavior which I do not know if it is a correct simulation of the real one.

In my Kuban campaign I have a mission that is entirely played with this vehicle. There is a road that connect Gelendzhik village and Kabardinka village. For this mission you have to go through both villages. This road around the Gelendzhik-2 airfield has a steep slope to go over a hill and then down towards Kabardinka. It is a real road, not a trail or path, I mean one that on the map qualifies as On Road for the AI.

I have driven the vehicle and whatever I try it is impossible to climb this slope. At mid height the vehicle stops, wheels slip and the vehicle even slips back. I tried with the vehicle controlled by AI and again it remains stuck at mid slope. With some brutal maoeuvers on this slope It may even roll on its side (very nicely simulated). I am sure the dynamics of the vehicle are well simulated, nevertheless I wonder if the real one would have made it or not.

We have another truck that is the ZIS 72K as AI only. That truck is able to climb this slope. The other trucks like the GAZ AA have no problem too.  So the question here is if this simulated behavior of the collector vehicle is correct or not. I tried also to climb the slope Off Road but the problem remains exactly the same.

Here some pictures below to illustrate this:

View towards Gelendzhik-2 and 1 airfields. You can see the truck on the road full speed. The truck here is AI driven.

This is the view with the slope towards Kabardinka the truck has started the climb

The truck is stuck and starts to slip laterally

Here the truck slips backwards a few meters but definitively won't climb more.

That'll be the Klingon Force-Field!

Maybe try pointing the gun backwards and start firing as soon as you begin to slow down?

Maybe some part of that road act like it is normal terrain not road?

The friction is not well simulated in this case

One can think about that, as we are in sommer but the weather is rainy but not on that part where it is a dry gravel road, so grip should be good. The engine is really not so powerful but in low or first gear that should be okay. Again I am no expert of these trucks so it is difficult to say, but the other AI trucks make it in identical conditions and in the same mission.

Truck climb performance… My week is made and it is only Thursday!

AI vehicles don't act the same way as Player controled vehicles. In supply column attacks I often see, that trucks are standing until I start attacking them. Then they start moving again, with an acceleration you might see with today's Dakar Rally trucks, but definitely not with those low powered loaded trucks back then.

On the other side, I would guess your playable truck should be able that hill, too. I would post it in the Bug Report section, so the developers will have a look at it.

Fixing this might depend on how much time devs want to turn il2 into a driving simulator... guessing the lateral slide is a hole in the physics model (need to find other roads like this to confirm it isn't a terrain glitch) having to do with lateral friction on tires.  Tires do all sorts of things that can be difficult to simulate without weird behaviors cropping up in extreme situations.

It does make you wonder about the tendency of aircraft to just slide along the ground like they've hit snow, instead of the ground friction instantly torquing the fuselage into a spinning mass of flying metal... there might be some issue where a fix would make smooth ditching impossible (but then again shouldn't it be?  How realistic are the long slides in il2?).  It all depends on what sort of coding voodoo they are using to get vehicles to work in a flight sim...

We have the answer to that. The time necessary or deemed necessary. It is a battle sim. Besides the planes we have the best simulated playable tanks, we have collector playable vehicles that are outstanding and more to come. Definitively this sim is planes but also vehicles. And I am very happy that it is so.
