Is there a portrait Mod?

Has anyone created a Mod to replace the . . . I don't know how to describe the pilot portraits? Early GULAG/Konzentrationlager? 

 

Does anyone know where (subdirectory) those photos are stored?

It's been mentioned several times before.  Unfortunately there isn't really a good way to mod the pilot Career portraits in the game.  Each "face" is randomly generated from a range of individual noses, ears, eyes and foreheads etc.  Hopes were probably high for this rather complex feature.  Although in practice it's a bit of a swing and a miss in that perhaps 1 in 10 faces look reasonably natural, while 1 in 20 will give you such a jump-scare that you will sleep with the light on for a week. 

 

There was a comment a year or so ago about it maybe getting a revisit at some time in the future.  Whether they try to improve the current auto-gen or go for the more classic photos of real people is unclear however.  FC is meant to be getting a Career mode later this year, so perhaps that might be an opportunity to make some changes?

Maybe its possible, to put in all the face part pictures, your favorite picture and when the face generator is choosing, it can only generate and put the one favourite face you like in the portrait?

Nowadays, there needn't be any discernible difference. See https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/ for instance, all auto-generated faces.

 

Of course, the neural net and toolboxes needed for such a thing would add a couple of 100 MBs to the install size, so I don't know if it's worth it. Although I suppose they could do this server-sided since the career is only playable online anyhow; the game sends a request to the IL2 server and the server (which runs the required neural net) returns a 128x128 or so image.

Sounds like Young Frankenstein.  Not only did they get the mashed up face but they got Abby Normal's  brain too.  Explains a lot.

The American, British, and Soviet ones are alright, but the German ones need to be totally redone. Way too many shaved heads, bad haircuts, and moustaches.

I mean, they don't look too bad really (if you exclude that bald Luftwaffe one) ? Some combinations are really horrific though.

 

Edit: We are using some in FTC's Pilot & Mission Database, and some are quite good. We've removed the bald one though cos it turned up far too frequently.
