Jason_Williams Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Quote 306 Hello Everyone! While we continue to work to finish several aircraft for BON and FC2, we would like to take a moment to show you something else we’ve been working on- our new sky technology! Many of you have complained in the past about “banding” that occurs in our sky-dome, especially as light begins to fade late in the day and at night. We agree that this was not ideal and we have decided to do something about it. We have now adopted a more physics-based technology that has more or less become an industry standard these days. Before we had more of an artistic approach, but it had some limitations as many of you pointed out. The new sky is meant to simulate the sky on a round globe and we have adapted it to our engine. The results are pretty nice. The end result should be no banding, including the glow around the moon. This should give you a more realistic picture. Our new sky also allows us to change how we do dust and haze in the atmosphere which we will look at in the not too-distant future as well. Full text and visuals HERE. Jason 22 12 6
sevenless Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Very nice. It is getting better and better. 1
Rjel Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 I love the pic with the backlit P-38. Incredible looking. 3
Audgisil Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Really nice! One thing to consider though would be to remove the lens flare if possible. Lens flare is really nothing more than an artifact caused by light passing through a camera lens. Most of time, good photographers or camera men will do everything possible to avoid it. It's never something that the human eye sees. We're all just really used to it from movies and video games. As the pilot sitting in the cockpit and looking with my own eyes, I would never see any lens flare. Although, now that I look at the screenshots again, none of them show from the cockpit and might just be simulating the various camera views and then the lens flares is used to give things a "Hollywood" feel. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think we see any lens flare when sitting the cockpit. I'd have to go look. If that's the case... well done and nevermind ? Anyway lots of lens flare is just another way of saying it's a guy with a camera who either doesn't know what he's doing... or a conscious artistic choice. In things like first person shooters, it's the first thing I shut off in the video settings, followed closely by motion blurr. 4 17
40plus Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) Very nice, can't wait to see how it looks in VR edit: I'm not digging the lens flare though. What's up with that? JJ Abrams join your crew? Edited February 4, 2022 by 40plus
Youtch Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 This looks fantastic and will make this game looks even more gorgeous. I understand it will demand higher minimum requirements for video memory, but assuming you meet the requirements, will it have any impact on Performance? Thinking about VR here.
[F.Circus]MoerasGrizzly Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) Quote This technology should not have much of an impact on your performance, however, it does use more Video Memory, so we highly recommend you have at least 2GB or more. I just want to point out that the IL-2 store page on steam has "4gb of Vram or better" as the minimum system requirements already, which seemed a bit too excessive before this DD, and now definitely seems like an oversight. =621=Samikatz Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Especially like this shot: Better looking night skies will go a long way to making a night interdiction career fun, good thing we're getting the perfect plane for that this year 4 1
W_Braun Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Them 8+ bomber formations would look great with that new sky.

It's never something that the human eye sees. Exactly. I hate that effect in DCS. They have linked it there with the sun glare. So if you turn off the lens flare the sun is just a white ball in the sky. It might look fancy for some screen shots but rendering this in VR is really irritating. 7
firdimigdi Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Ooh, that is pretty. Hope it comes with options (like the lens-flare some people mentioned already). 3
Voidhunger Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 hmmm maybe my eyes are bad now but i see a lot of banding in those pictures. Its even worse than in current version ?

Its even worse than in current version ? That's probably because the JPG compression to post them on forum. The P-38 screenshot is 77k, the game BMP version is probably 2MB. Jason_Williams Posted February 4, 2022 Author Posted February 4, 2022 Everyone,I screwed up. Due to how I saved the originals or due to the forum there is some banding in the images DUE TO COMPRESSION not from the game. I will try to fix these images, but in game this does not happen.I will make the original uncompressed images available.Uncompressed Originals Here Jason 7 11 3
76IAP-Black Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 I like the constant updates, lets see how they will update the water in the future 1
FTC_Knipser Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 That looks really promising!! Just like the new clouds, that will add a lot to the game. What about the high altitude cirrus clouds that are in the game atm. That layer with a cloud texture on it at around 10Km altitude. I know, that layer was looking pixelated sometimes, but imho it helped to make the sky look more realisitc. Are you going to completly get rid of that or will there be a new version of that cirrus layer with a higher resolution maybe? 3
sg72 Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Looks great in downloaded pics. And Lens flare is defo. a NoNo? Bad enough playing BoBP through my ? Lenses. ?
Gora_ Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) This is amazing how you hear and care about community guys. Can't see bending now, which was very noticeable, and the sky will come up on the another level with this update. Great to see such a improvement. Now the sky, together with the new cloud technology will be one of the best in the market. Thank you, outstanding job! When!? PS Also, as being said - lens flare should be an option, because it is not realistic when you see word with your eyes. But for the movies will be great. Edited February 4, 2022 by =LG/F=Gora_ 1

rocho Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 It's only my impression or this new tech also removes or decreases the exagerated cyan hue of the global lighting?
fergal69 Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 (edited) Looking good. Better looking than the weather I have here Edited February 4, 2022 by fergal69
Toots_LeGuerre Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 The war is over for me. It started with the new clouds. Now with the new lighting effects, I will put on music and fly off into the sunset. Beautiful. 3
