He111 dorsal gunner gone AWOL

Last night I took off in a multiplayer game in combat box and was slowly climbing to 3000m while switching through gunner views every few minutes to check behind, and about 15 minutes into the climb I couldn’t switch to the dorsal gunner. Thought my joystick button was playing up but it was working fine when tested. Did he fall out or get snatched by a giant eagle ....or even a dragon? Very weird, he never even said goodbye. I’d love to know why he wouldn’t respond. Anyone else had this experience. I couldn’t switch to 3rd person view to see him as it’s not possible on that server.

Probably a real person took the role.

Ah, why didn’t I think of that. Probably explains why I got shot down 5 minutes from target. I got the culprit when he came into view of the bottom gunner but was too late then.  Can you lock your gunners so no one takes over? I much prefer to manage them myself or maybe lock the dorsal gunner as that is the rear view I use most.

Yes you can lock the gunners, hit esc key and there's an option to manage gunner stations.

Thanks, I don’t mind if the guys a competent gunner but if it’s just someone ‘seeing what it’s like’ it’s a bit of a pain. Took me nearly an hour to get to the target at an altitude of 5000m and to get shot down minutes from dropping is a bit of a bummer.  But it is realistic, if your gunners are lame then you’re not coming home :)

I have my gunners locked by default and only open if asked on the chat or for squadmates, I've had people jumping in and wasting ammo shooting nowhere or even at friendlies or at my own plane...this happened rarely, but still, better sorry than wasting a long solo bombing sortie.

And on the flip side I have jumped in a couple of bombers hoping to get the pilot to victory...and not had to fire a shot as they got too close to AA guns and went down in flames. :(
