Angry_Kitten Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 in 4.7 i get two visual graphics issues. about a 200 meter circle centered on my plane or tank, is perfectly fine and normal looking scenery. but everything else is gross and ill defined.. its like the circle represents full powered graphics, and outside the circle is low res non 4k plane skin. the minute the circle hits it, its beatiful, once teh circle leaves it, its back to monotone two color foliage.. driving a tank last night, in a town, i kept seeing side roads,,, looked like tan beach sand. once the circle hit them, they became highly detailed strips of GRASS.
kendo Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 Maybe in settings screen try setting Distant Landscape Detail setting higher? Otherwise, no idea.
MajorMagee Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 In order to manage the rendering workload they limit the grass visibility to 300m. Keep in mind that the number of objects being created goes up as the square of the distance so the poly counts for things like grass get quite unreasonable if you try to render the whole scene at the same level of detail.
Angry_Kitten Posted February 4, 2022 Author Posted February 4, 2022 i could understand the grass, but i dont remember this circle in 4.6 or at least i dont remember it being so incredibly obvious..

The circle for the scenery for ground detail like trees etc. around your viewing position is rendered up to a variable radius that will depend on your altitude. Outside that circle the map will be rendered with a sort of what seems to be a flat ground texture to mimic the color of the forest, grass, various crop fields, roads etc. This has been most probably made to save memory and CPU/GPU load. You will then see as you fly that trees forests may disappear behind your direction of motion and appear in front of you. It does make sense to have this feature. The higher you are and the further the distance to objects under you but also in front of you. There are also other factors that can come into play. The atmospheric conditions will also impact this effect. A lot of low clouds and when you fly above then basically you won't see it. You have fog or haze, rain etc then the contrast at the border of the circle is much less visible. Depending on the suns position in the sky does make also a difference on how strong you will perceive the circles border. The worst case is when you fly around 2000 meters in a completely pure clear sky with the sun high in the sky but slightly behind you. When you are very low it will impact you less as you have the maximum radius in front of you and if you have not a flat environment it may help in certain cases. Buildings and the map will be rendered depending on your settings like Unlimited and 150 km. But the radius of the ground detail rendering around you cannot be set for what I know but my knowledge is limited. Just in case you wan't to try you can enlarge the grass detailed rendering circle diameter. You have three settings that go from OFF no grass to Normal (100mt diameter) to Ultra (300 mt diameter). Diameter means that you will se the grass in front of you at half that distance. Normal at 50mt (that's really not good better off) and with Ultra at 150mt. It maybe useful sometimes for missions at ground level like tank, vehicles to enlarge that circle. When you are at ground level all flat that's fine. But if you have slight downslope then upslope in that case your eye will see a difference between the grassy and not grassy area much more. You can enlarge that area if you want. There is a distance after which it wont make a difference anyway because you will not be able to see the difference. The right choice of radius depends also on the resolution at which you play and the size of your display. This mean the higher the resolution and the size of the screen and you may see the details further, that means you need a larger radius. Antialising, sharpness can also improve your perception of detail, depending on what solution you use. There are many possibilities here between the game and the graphic board drivers that you may have. Before you modify the configuration file make a safe backup copy just in case you mess up. Open the "IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\Startup.cfg configuration file with your basic text editor like Notepad (do not use Word or any similar programs). In this configuration file you will see a large list of parameters and one is Grass. Increase the diameter by 50mt steps. It may have an impact on framerate or fluidity of the images. Check and see if your system can handle it as each system hardware software setup is different. I use a 700 mt diameter circle, because as I said I have some ground action, like driving a vehicle or walking and running on the ground and my system can handle it. I see no difference with my system in terms of FPS or fluidity. No change. My system can handle this without a noticeable impact. And when flying very quickly the grass is not rendered anymore anyway. I tried 1'000 mt diameter just for the sake of it. No visible impact whatsoever in terms of FPS but there was an issue with the grass texture that started flashing and the way the texture filled the map was weird. So probably the coding doesn't handle such a large mapping of the texture. 1'000mt diameter is 500mt in front of you. And I can very well see it on my display.
Angry_Kitten Posted February 5, 2022 Author Posted February 5, 2022 It makes it hard to find targets on the ground, and in some cloud/weather settings, everything can go from dark and dreary to instantly bright and sunny even though NOTHIGN has actually changed, ie, full soon, at noon, no clouds selected.
