AKA_Relent Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 (edited) Something that would be very welcome to The Great Battles aircraft would be some sort of multi-page kneeboard we could customize, that would show in the cockpit, similar to the picture we can currently use to put technical data on. The problem with the picture is it’s just one image, its fairly small, and is sometimes in a place where you can’t see it easily. For me, I’d want to put some of the critical key mappings, as a reminder, without having to go into the settings/key mappings, and scroll through all of the tabs. If you play the game frequently and fly the same set of planes, you can usually remember most/all of the mappings. But anytime I try to fly aircraft I haven’t flown for a while, I can’t always remember some of the not so obvious key mappings (I.e. many mappings are the same for all aircraft, but many are specific to certain aircraft). It would just be nice to pull up a kneeboard image(s) in the cockpit to quickly review the mappings, for example. Jason, for your consideration, thanks. Edited January 31, 2022 by AKA_Relent 2 6
Noisemaker Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 The question is, where would you put a kneeboard, when you can't see your knees? 1

But seriously, other sims have it pop up on the side of the screen similar to the mini map display. Ideal for checklists and other pilots notes. 5

Just to bring the jokes back IN for a moment, why don't you have a real kneepad for each plane? Problem solved!! 1
AKA_Relent Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 As far as where to display the kneeboard image, I leave that up to the developers. Maybe on the left or right side of the screen, and as mentioned, a multi-page setup would be great.
56RAF_Roblex Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 Yes the kneepad app in IL2 (or was it CLoD?) was really useful and even more so when there was a big event planned and you could load in the mission routes and recce photos.
Confused_2018 Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 I've seen on yt in other games that they look to be useful indeed.
Charlo-VRde Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 +1 on this request being added into the game, either by the devs or a 3rd party who can figure out a way to do it that is permitted in the MP servers. At https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/62400-mod-vrem-vr-enhancer/ there is a great kneepad-like feature included, though it only works if you also have the 3dmigoto library, which is not allowed on the MP servers I fly, for valid reasons.
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted February 2, 2022 Posted February 2, 2022 Well, we have the big map overlay with specifications menu we can scroll through… something compact would be ideal.. I know the mini map is available too but is that only for “normal” difficulty modes? I’ve never really used it, first time I saw it was when I installed the game and realized everything was set normal.. I think having the mini map available for all difficulty setting and a page function with key binding perhaps to scroll through it… the one in dcs is perfect, and being able to pre-edit the pages for il2 with images of waypoints or even recon targets info would be cool too.. 3
Taurus Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Necro Bump. After all this time and still no integrated Kneeboard? We fortunately now have the ability to customise controller setups for each individual aircraft, but no means of any in-game helper system like the kneeboard, which are so effective in other simulations. It is a shame when time is at a premium. (I know there a are hacks out there for a kneeboard, but they are just that, hacks.)
Knarley-Bob Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 But, but, we ain't got no legs..................... 1
czech693 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 My kneeboards. 6"x8" magnetic dry erase boards from Amazon. I've got a larger 8 1/2"x11" for keyboard commands. 3
Knarley-Bob Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Now THAT is a cockpit...............wow
czech693 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 About 35 years of progression from a simple table top joystick with twist grip and slider. 2 1
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 It’s sweet having the physical kneeboard/notepad while flying. In IL-2 1946 I had a pad and calculator to make my bombing alt conversions (as some ships are in meters/feet) and target info such as target altitude… but that was in 2D. Now flying in VR… the whole map up in your face….. I change the opacity lower so it’s somewhat see through. Just cut it In half, and make it a bit smaller? But… some day, some how, some way…. We will have the technology… I know it
TG-55Panthercules Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 Already exists - I use it in VR for Flying Circus, and it's great. Search for OpenKneeboard
Taurus Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 6 hours ago, TG-55Panthercules said: Search for OpenKneeboard And on their website; While OpenKneeboard is not a cheat, it does hook into the games rendering and input pipelines, which over-eager anti-cheat systems may consider ban-worthy. While this is similar to how other overlays work (e.g. Steam and Discord), it is possible that using OpenKneeboard may lead to an anti-cheat ban. Note that OpenKneeboard has NO WARRANTY; see the LICENSE file and full text of the GPLv2 for details. That is why I would hope that the Kneeboard is from the game developer themselves. Not hacks. Does 1C approve of OpenKneeboard?
TG-55Panthercules Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 That's a good question - I only play SP so I wasn't thinking about that. Not sure if it has been addressed yet or not - might want to check this thread in case something was said about it in there: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/81683-openkneeboard-a-not-only-for-vr-kneeboard-app/#comment-1235957 If not, it would be good if someone from the dev team could comment. 1

This replaces the cockpit photo with all the information you could ever need. Theirs also websites like dead reckon(ing?) that will help you with pre-flight issues such as fuel loadout. Theirs a couple of different map sites. And you can then adjust course using real world wind course adjustment sites etc. Apart from this I have two lined a4 pages that I keep extra notes on maybe 3 lines per plane. But literally all the dude who shared the picture is doing is printing out the cockpit photo from below with some extra notes. I guess if you are in VR it might be hard to edit/fit everything onto the cockpit photo. Maybe devs could let us have "pages" on the cockpit photo so we can flip to extra notes. And/or give us personal space for notes we can edit per plane on another tab next to plane specifications in-game Edited April 6, 2023 by RossMarBow 1
