Pe-2 flight

I was getting tired of getting shot down by Messers in my Il-2 so I decided to take a Pe-2 for a high level bombing run against Voroponovo or Pitomnik on the Stalingrad multiplayer map. The RBK-10 made navigation quite easy once I got close to the front. I decided to head over the main battle zone for fun rather than coming in the boring way. I reckoned at 5000m alt I'd sweep over any defending Messers.

But no. I saw one climbing up beneath me at about 4k when my rear gunner called one behind me too. I let the gunner get a burst off then threw the bomber into a screaming vertical dive that the Messer couldn't follow. Once at high speed I throttled back and deployed the divebrakes and continued straight down towards the clouds below.

While still above the clouds I could see the German artillery below (reported in bug section) so I dropped my 2x 500 on them as they came into view (no hits??) and pulled back hard, clearing the ground by a couple of feet before pulling back up into the cloud. Used the RPK-10 to pass the first airbase (didn't want to get vulched landing) then headed east till I picked up the Leninsk beacon and put her down once the two Il-2's cleared the runway.

No air kills, no ground kills but we survived! Good fun.

It's certainly quite a beast!

Speaking of the RPK-10... is there a tutorial on how to use it somewhere?

I haven't tried the whole Pe-2 thing yet.

I guess I should give it a whirl.

in MP it just points to nearest friendly base

in qmb it should point to base you took off from

edit: it should be made more complex later

No wonder there was a period in 1941, where Luftwaffe pilots were quite reluctant to attack Pe-2s.

Full formations of Pe-2s crewed by human players could be quite devastating in MP.

I had a 4 kill run in one the other day, my gunners accounted for 3 of them.

Ability to select the Beacon frequency?

I think the Pe-2 may well be a big hit on line once we get some decent ground targets going.

Agreed. It's my go to bomber in IL-2 1946 on a variety of eastern front scenarios for all of the reasons that the OP demonstrated.... great aircraft to fly. It just doesn't have much to bomb right now. I've experimented with it but it needs something to actually do. Then people might be interested!

Ability to select the Beacon frequency?

Ability to switch channels, at least:

Radio beacons in Quick Mission editor will be placed on all airfields where you plan to start and finish the mission. In multiplayer, the beacons will be working on almost all of the airfields. Your fixed loop radio compass will be responding to the nearest beacon by default. We know that you’d like to have more settings and an option to switch channels - and we’ll add it later.

I for one would be thrilled if the bombers get popular online, as that will mean more of them for me to shoot at.
