Majpalmer Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 I gifted myself a new rig for Xmas/Retirement. It runs Il-2 beautifully. With all the bells and whistles turned on I was getting 140+ fps with my 3080ti with the stock settings (the only change I made was to max out quality over performance). But, you know how it is. Maybe I can do even better, right? I started hunting around on Forums and YouTube. Found what seemed to be the perfect video. Here was how I could max out the performance of Il-2 on my Nvidia card! I made each of the changes as suggested. Started my next career mission and.... FPS in the 90s! I dropped 50 fps!!!! Well, maybe there were too many planes? Ran another and the same result. Reset back to the default settings and voila! Back in the mid-140s. The moral of the story? Everyone's rig is different. What works great for one person actually may work in an opposite fashion for another. But imagine if I had seen that video two months ago and used it as a reference to set up my card? Hey! 90 fps? That's great compared to what I'd been getting with my old hardware. Would I have eventually figured out that by trying to optimize my system, I had actually porked it?
Raptorattacker Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 Horses for courses my friend. What's good for the goose ain't necessarily good for the gander (or gamer in this case)!
[F.Circus]MoerasGrizzly Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 Aside from rig related stuff, drivers and the version of il2 used when the video was made will also play a factor. (And there's a chance the person that have the video may not actually have known what they were doing after all)
Gambit21 Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) Vanilla 1080 and 60 FPS at 4K and happy for now. I can’t imagine having a 3080 and wasting time trying to milk FPS when I’m seeing 140. That’s just me. Horses for courses as Raptor said. Edited February 1, 2022 by Gambit21
Jaws2002 Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) Yep. On an older rig, that's struggling, it's worth tweaking to try to get more performance, but for strong computer you can just leave it alone and enjoy the game. My CPU is stock now, but i did undervolt my 3080Ti, to burn less power and run cooler. I don't need the fans to blow like mad every time I game. The card alone was sucking 450W in testing. That generates a lot of heat. Don't need that for five extra FPS. This generation of Nvidia cards are powerful, but extremely power inefficient. Edited February 1, 2022 by Jaws2002
Majpalmer Posted February 1, 2022 Author Posted February 1, 2022 My 3080ti ran a bit hot and loud. Those fans were running fast. But then after about a week or so it ... settled down. Not that loud. It might be the ambient situation. I'm in Florida but it's cold as hell--for here. It will be interesting to see what happens when it gets hot. I keep my office door closed, which means the room is several degrees colder than the rest of the house--the thermostat is at the opposite end. I also keep the blinds closed so the room doesn't warm up during the day.

Don't forget to sacrifice a cow to Odin, that always helps bring the temps down a few degrees, if you want slightly higher framerates, sacrifice a bull to Zeus. You're welcome.
