Elusive Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 Hello, as I understand the presets set the area around your plane at which to render vegetation but what's the difference between the draw distance and the landscape detail? I am currently figuring out my VR settings and have arrived at the point where I can get somewhat stable 72 fps and am now looking the balance the terrain as well. Terrain roughness and grass quality is turned off as I understand this only applies to tanks which I'm not interested in. My specs are: 2070 Super, Ryzen 3700X, 32GB Ram, Oculus quest 2 with original link cable running at 72Hz 1.2x 4864x2448. What do the settings described in the title exactly do and how to adjust them accordingly? Any help would be immensely appreciated.
Raptorattacker Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 Terrain roughness and grass quality ARE effective in Planes. If you;re happy with them turned off then fair enough but just so's you know, they do make a difference in Planes.
VA_Kamicosmos Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 I turned off the roughness and grass cause once you get off the ground, you don't really see those effects from the air. My horizon draw distance is at like....70km? I think? It's weird cause especially if I zoom, I will see some things 'out there' floating between the horizon and the sky. A bit disturbing. I am very curious how you are getting 70fps in a Quest 2 with a 2070. I have a 2060 and with lots of tweaking, have an average of 37fps. Besides the above settings, I have anti-aliasing off, terrain set to blurred, clouds on High (cause they rock), mirrors off, shadows on Medium, reflections off. (I am running wireless, via Virtual Desktop and SteamVR. I need to try out OpenComposite, but I'm very afraid of breaking it all. It took a lot to get it to work in it's current config as it was) (In 2D I can run fully cranked at around 150-170fps. Even fully cranked I can run in VR, but it's like 30fps with many dips to the upper 20s (which cause me a bit of nausea) and frequent pauses and sometimes the 'bubble' around me will break, and it snaps to like an iMax Massive curved screen with Blackness behind me for a second. THat can really mess with my head!)
Elusive Posted January 29, 2022 Author Posted January 29, 2022 This isn't the point of this thread but I would love to help you out anyways. For some odd reason opening up the console in the debug tool and closing everything that isn't strictly needed for VR made my game run a lot smoother. Open composite gave me around 10-15 fps and broke absolutely nothing. Mess a bit with the resolution in the oculus app and set all the link settings in the debug tool to 0 and don't forget to turn off the worst thing ever invented: Asyncronous Spacewarp. Setting all VR programs in task manager to high priority also helps. Try the control panel settings in this video: 1

Roughness you can see actually, but it doesn't affect gameplay in the least (the actual physics of the rough ground apply regardless of this setting) - it's more of a reminder that wheels-down landings in fields might not go so smoothly - no idea how much it affects performance as I never took time to benchmark with it on or off, I just left it on Medium and fields have a distinct roughness to them when seen from somewhere under 3km height compared to when it's off. Grass is actually a good indicator of your current height, set it to 100m or so and you have an immediate extra visual cue when when going under that height (if the ground, treetops and other scenery isn't enough); downside is that in some aerodromes you can't see where the taxi-path or strip are that easily when on the ground and it can be a bit annoying when flying real low and it seems to end right in front of you even at max distance, again not sure how much it actually affects performance when it does actually render.
