Newb? RE: keybindings

I have mine working. So I'm not asking for someone to send me their files. What I don't understand is what the difference is between assigning keys to the 2d or the 3rd columns. Both appear to take precedence over the default settings in column one. But why two additional columns?

Thanks.

You can use them to map commands to a controller.

You can bind different keys to the same command, one in each column

I would also recommend to leave the first column alone as it's the game defaults and if your controller(s) screw up you will at least be able to use those keyboard commands in an emergency.  If you must use the first column at the very least make a copy of the default keybinds as a backup.

And, once you have your controller(s) set up the way you like save the "input' folder so it can be used for "Disaster Relief" in the unfortunate event lightning strikes your in house wiring, an earthquake swallows your house while you are out having dinner or a 'La Brea'-like sinkhole drops your home into another dimension.

That I have already learned to do. Thanks.

Being new to GB I opened the controller file on install and was shocked, key bindings for everything including the kitchen sink especially compared to COD!  My problem is I left them as is and then pressed a key and nothing or unexpected happened, so I went in and deleted all the key bindings and started fresh.  That fixed the first problem, but caused other problems, so I reset to default and instead deleted all the joystick bindings they had in the second and third columns as I use my Sidewinder strictly for engine control, trim and flight which helped but still had unwanted things happening when I pressed a key.

Anyway, to the point (finally), from above I gather that the columns are a priority ranking system?  First column is low man, third is top?  Also I noticed quite a few bindings cause a conflict but it will show "key XYZ is also mapped to turret control", do I have to worry about this conflict if I am strictly flying?

And finally, does anyone know of a web page or UT video that shows the required settings you need for Russian a/c vs German?  I use one I found for COD UK planes and it saved a lot of trouble being able to delete unnecessary a/c and engine keys that have no affect IE: the Hurr/Spit do not have aileron trim (?) so you can get rid of that, but the 109 does, so you need it.

They aren't any sort of priority system but just another way to enter whatever command it is you are trying to use. For instance, I have both the default keyboard commands for the flaps and then in column 2 the ones I have mapped to my throttle. The game then doesn't care what inputs are used.

As to the other question, no you don't have to worry about key binding conflicts in such situations.

What Luke said. For instance, I have two different key binds set on one switch.  It toggles the parking brake on the WW2 birds so equipped, it also serves as the blip switch on the WW1 kites.  The default key bind for the parking brake is also still active.

Why do my settings move from one column to the next? I'll program let's say the fire all guns command, spacebar, as my joystick trigger in Column #3. But the next time I open the settings, it's been shifted over to column #2.

Thank you for the replies.  I am still a bit confused why when I remap a part it doesn't work.  For instance I wanted open/close engine cowling on my left/right arrow keys but it wouldn't work, only if I used the default binding would it work.

I have also noticed joystick moving over in the columns like Majpalmer.  It doesn't affect anything, just moves over.

In IL2 I use the default keymapping (LCTL + E) for bail out, and so on.  I use dx commands in DCS, that's what those extra columns are for besides your analog devices axis assignments.  I forgot I have one dx command in IL2 for TIR center, also in DCS.

Cheers

Are you on Win 11 and installed in the default folder?  It has trouble letting go of control over your programs and makes everything write protected, with even administrator control kind of sketchy.  Best not to install in the default programs folder in 11, if you did you'll have to remove read only properties and hope it lets them keep.

It's best not to install in Program Files/Program Files(x86) on any Windows machine since Win 7.  Uncle Billy thinks you are too stupid to make changes in files and programs and so is "protecting" you.

IL-2 does not create Registry entries so can be placed anywhere on your machine.

Win 10 and the game is installed on my D drive (SSD).

Problem solved.  The file did end up with a check mark on the 'read only' box, not sure how it got there but I guess I must have checked it at one time or another.

That does save the settings but doesn't allow for changes.

Better solution (IMO), save a copy of the 'input' folder and save it somewhere outside the game so if there is a problem down the road, use the backup.  If you make any changes to the current file, back that one up and overwrite the current saved version.

This has worked for me on several occasions.

Ditto Beebop. (Any relation to Shebop from Air Warrior 20+ years ago?)

On my machine, Windows always rechecks the "read only" function. I have no idea why. So any time I make a change to settings, I back the files up before I exit the system.

I haven't had any settings issues for almost a fortnight. That's not to say I understand how they all work.

If you got your computer from a vendor or 2nd hand it may have come configured that way or you might have done it inadvertently.  It can be fixed.

Here's a link on how to set or unset "Read Only" properties for individual files or all files in a folder.  Sorry for all the ads but I think it explains the process clearly;

I hope this might be helpful for you and/or others.

Yes I have backed it up, I learned that with COD where it would erase your settings if you plugged your joystick into the wrong usb port and stuff.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.
