Should I purchase the Spitfire Mk. Vb?

It's a fun plane to fly. I plan on using it extensively when the BON map arrives. I'm curious as to how much of an anachronism that would be in terms of airfields on the pre-invasion version. The RAF ACB built a lot of airfields during 1942-1944.

There will probably be more than a few for pre-1944 missions. Even among the airfields that had been there for a long time, many of them were upgraded & expanded around 1943-44 (including Manston and Biggin Hill).

I will say buy the Hurricane you won't regret it, I feel like you get 4 airplanes in one and it is perhaps my favorite airplane to fly in SP. The Spitfire Mk V is a great aircraft, I feel like what makes it special is you have a great performing aircraft but not superior to the aircraft it faces in game, it require a head on a swivel and accurate shooting due to its limited canon ammo.

Alot of planes are turning out to be great past their "ideal use by date".  Nothing keeps me warm like a e7 with the belly armor when i raid a flak heavy air field.

and NOT suffer air speed penalties after i have dropped my eggs.

Get the spit fire. Its nostalgia.  It is equivalent in power to the 202

The thing about the Spit V is that you really need to set up your gunsight correctly and only shoot 1 second bursts at convergence.  Do that and the limited ammo is not much of an issue as the otherwise 'weak' firepower only takes a one second burst to shred the target.

I got the Mk9 Spit and did very well in her. I got a lot of air missions in Bodenplatte career, and liked it a lot. The Mk9 is certainly well worth it, for anyone reading this and wondering. That said, I'm about to get the Mk14 as it is better armed and has other improvements too.  I'd likle to have flown the good old, rugged Hurricane, but as I only fly the later war stages, the Hurricane doesn't feature in them, so I'll stick to my Spitfire.

Best thing to do - for anyone who loves IL-2 but doesn't want to commit to full price - is wait for the next sale, then get the Spitfire you want. As I said, the Mk9 did very well for me - despite it not doing well on the flat as the ME-109 - but my technique is dive, squirt, then regain my height, rather than chase turn. That works for me.

Good luck old boy.

You should have bought the Hurricane first.

It's more fun than all the spits.

Spit9 is a lot better than the spit5.

But the spit5 is still an ok plane.

I would rank it as 2nd tier.

Mk 5 doesn't really get a place to shine in GB, as you only really see it as a lend-lease hand-me-down here. The 109's and 190A's really outclass it. I felt like the Mk.V needs constant trimming as well. If you do PWCG, the Mk V could be lots of fun early over the channel.

On the other hand, the Hurricane with VVS armament is insane fun in BoS. It eats anything unfortunate enough to get in your sight.

Hurricane is a lot of fun. I've flown it quite a bit lately. The Russian weapon packs are devastating, but I also like the standard eight gun version. You have to pay attention to convergence and shoot from a side, to bypass the armor, but they work. The plane is just so smooth and fun to fly....Plus you can train for the IAR-80 with it.

I was still learning how potent the Russian weapons were, so I was dumbfounded how quickly 109's were going down. The UB and ShVAK were seriously good.

Indeed, the .303's have some teeth with the newer damage model.

You have a bullet hole in your elevator and your plane is still flying. Does not compute.

What exactly is that supposed to mean?

That's the difference between machine guns and cannons. Had that been a cannon hit, it would have most likely been fatal.

Few bullet holes don't mean much.

Cracking wise about the Spitfire's fragile tail.
