They always drown. It's an Il-2 BoX rule.

Pilots don’t always drown, as my wingmate and I experienced on Finnish Virtual Pilots MP server last night after we both ran out of fuel a couple kilometers off shore. We bailed out and the server said we managed to get to safety. After the mission ended we also saw we were awarded points on their website.

Depending on how close to shore would be a large factor.

One would be more buoyant in salt water, BUT, sharks live there too.

Water temperature would also be a factor, hard to say what 'swimming distance' would be. But the fact is some did survive. alot is left to chance.........

Not in Great Battles, you have ZERO  chance.

Great battles concept is "plane disabled/onfire ?" press esc and finish flight, imagine what could have happened (successful ditching/emergency landing/parachuting into trees/water), otherwise get 50 to 100% chance to lose your pilot avatar.

Hyper immersive.

Not a lot of sharks (i.e nothing bigger than a dogfish) in the Black Sea and no fatal shark attacks in the English Channel - ever.

Succumbing to the cold and/or drowning is what does you in so you will need rescuing by boat or seaplane, or maybe floating ashore in your rubber dinghy. And in Il-2 GB that possibility doesn't exist.

As Patrick McGoohan said in 'Escape from Alcatraz'... 'They drowned.'
