VR spotting vs Flatscreen spotting

I was wondering if the Devs could take on a project for improving the consistency of the spotting experience between VR players and flatscreen players.

My friend I fly with using track ir can see contacts, sometimes many miles before I even see a pixel. Im using a reverb G1, 3090 and I really cant see any aircraft more than about a mile away. Makes it very difficult to play in multiplayer.

There's no inconsistency between VR and flat screen per se, but between different screens and dpi settings. Using my Quest 2, I have no problem whatsoever with spotting.

Have a look at this post:

It's about flat screens, but the same principles are equally valid in VR. No matter what you try to do about it, there's always gonna be some combinations of graphics settings and screens that work better than others.

Right, your quest 2 is much lower resolution than my Reverb.

Im not technically inclined when it comes to software and graphics stuff. But I know that I cant spot nearly as well as my squadmates with track IR. Whatever the reasons are Id leave up to the experts.

Well, unfortunately those reasons are largely out of control of the devs. There's simply too many variables. Resolution, screen size, screen distance, screen contrast etc. all have an impact on how visible a distant aircraft is. The game doesn't have access to each of those properties. There are some possible solutions, but these have drawbacks of their own. The bottom line is that users with certain hardware configurations will always have an advantage over other hardware users. That's true for IL2 as for every other game.

I'm afraid there's no perfect solution, nor will there ever be. As a workaround however, you can reduce the resolution inside SteamVR, although that'll obviously hurt your eyecandy. But I guess it's first world problems that we're able to choose between eyecandy and spotting in the first place...

With my Quest 2, I seem to see contacts about the same time as a squadmate who is known to often see things before anyone else.    The problem I have is that I have no idea what they are until they get to within about 1km.  They are just a blurry shape until they get close and the rendering changes.    I made a flight recording and tried many many combinations of settings with the same track but nothing made any difference. Zooming seems to make them even more blurry.

With my reverb G2 I'm like a particularly attentive awacs. If anything I can see too well, seeing many very distant contacts cluttering out the closer ones. Easily better than any of my flatscreen wingmates, and about equal when it comes to identification

fwiw, the Quest 2 is actually pretty sharp as far as VR headsets go. Higher res than in Index in fact. 1832x1920 vs 2160x2160 on your G1. Lower sure, but not by as significant an amount you'd expect. Its a rock solid headset for entry level VR.

Like others have said, you need to adjust your settings to get the most out of spotting on your headset. I have no trouble Spotting and ID'ing targets against my flatscreen squadmates with my Lenovo Explorer.
