Is there a dedicated Keybinding to Jettison the canopy or is it Only automatic as part of the bailout sequence ?

Is the one for the bail out.

Bu in axis planes if you open it during the flight you will remain without

it was separate key, but they changed it. Its a shame

Indeed a shame would be nice to have it reinstated.

Why on earth would you want to jettison the canopy if not to bail out?

Forced landing, Ditching, Smoke removal, Gear up landing

Many people that fly online like to fly without the canopy to increase visibility.  I know it sounds crazy, but it's a thing.

And those people should fly the I-16, or one of the late-war bubbletops. This is a simulator, not some kind of War Thunder fantasy game. If you'd damage your plane by jettisoning your canopy without a very good reason, I'd be very surprised if you weren't court-martialed.

That said, Bert_Foster does give a couple of real-life scenarios, but neither of those is simulated in-game (you don't have to crawl out of an upside-down wreckage). So in-game there's no reason to have it, while it can be abused online by cheaters who want better visibility than they historically should have.

Oh, I agree totally.  I'd love to go back to flying online like I did in old IL2.  The BlitzPigs we're online almost every night back then.  I was never an "online ace" but I had my moments.  But now, I'd be nothing but cannon fodder.  Even with my new gaming monitor, my 68 year old eyes make spotting aircraft at distance a difficult at best task.

Air combat, even simulated, is a young person's endeavor, but I do miss it so...

Well you can’t shoot backwards in a fighter so you gotta throw something at the guy on your six :)

Yeah. I remember seeing people fly the duck without it online. Pretty silly.

Well, I'm sure that's how they see themselves.

if i rember correctly they thought its not important to have separate key for jettison canopy.

but again i dont want to be punished by online comunity who is still cheating in every game

In CloD/IL-2 Dover series Ctrl+J jettisons the canopy and Ctrl+O is the bailout function.

If thats the case then one would assume the FM gifts them a significant drag penalty to deal with ?

About 10km/h speed loss.

I may be wrong but im' pretty sure that if you hit the eject button when your on the ground and standing still, youll jettison the canopy and the pilot wont bail out, pretty sure that if you keep your speed up for a while the pilot will "stop trying" to eject as well, I may be mis remembering. My "engine on" button is next to my eject button for some reason ?

Hit the open button for your bubble top or Malcolm hood and start cranking the G and hold it, the canopy will stop in its tracks and stay cracked open just a bit, now you can relax and take a virtual smoke break, rejoin formation and impress and puzzle your wing man.?

To be fair, the idiots that jettison it also get increased drag and reduced performance. Overall its not worth it
