missions that never end

having a few probs recently wondered if anyone else has, on pilot career, missions that just don't work or finish, had a 110 support ground crossing, whent there on a couple of occasions, either nothing there and circle for an indefinite period, gave up after half an hour! or found 1-2 planes, no comms but followed home landed but still failed.

had this with jugs/109s too

I've had this happen to me once. A 109E ground attack mission in a Moscow campaign. No targets in target area.

These are patrol missions, where you guard a valuable target on the ground. You are supposed to circle the target for a specified amount of time, usually around 20 minutes (unfortunately I don't think this is spelled out in the mission briefing, which it really should be)

After the time has passed and the target is still intact, you get the "mission complete" message and can turn home.

Most missions, some kind of attacking force, usually a rather small one, will spawn and try to attack the target, but sometimes they only arrive after you've completed the mission and is on your way home, and sometimes nothing at all shows up.

yea but as i said even then you dont get mission complete, the worst for this seems to be the 110 missions

When you are not the flightleader, your flight will return after some time, too. So to me it looks like these missions are meant to be failed.

The mission is not complete, because you didn't receive the order to RTB. You are only allowed to return, after you are ordered to. And yes, from my experience the 110s are the worst. Especially intercept ground attack aircrafts in the E2 on the Moscow map never bring IL-2s showing up. You either RTB with no enemy contact, or you get attacked by fighters, while always another artillery unit is getting attacked by IL-2s, not the one you have to protect.

i know Yogi, they never say RTB, yet they do, so you follow and fail, a waste of 30-40 mins!

Now don't quote me on this. But i'm sure shooting off all your ammo triggers the RTB

I go here with Pat Wilson in his Career Generator. I don't care if the mission counts as failed. For me it is important to do my job inside my flight as good as I can and stay alive.

Try PWCG. You will be suprised....a complete different experience, compared to the boring & repetitive ingame "Career" .

I had a transport escort mission flying a Bf 109 G-2 on Battle of Stalingrad. We escorted a large flight of Ju 52s to the target area, they dropped their payload, then they continued to fly in a circle. I put the mission on 8x speed, left, came back, mission still ongoing. I ended the mission early, total in-mission time of over an hour, and the Ju 52s had been circling the whole time. Seems very unrealistic; unarmed transport planes should be immediately returning to base after dropping off cargo.

Probably a mission building issue.  If the logic is not correct that can happen.

There's a song you can sing to yourself while doing these kinds of missions:

This is the flight that never ends,

It just goes on and on my friends,

Some people started flying it not knowing what it was,

And they'll continue flying it forever just because,

This is the flight that never ends... (Repeat)
