Frequency of catastrophic fuel tank explosions

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I've noticed since the latest changes to fuel tanks fuel explosions are  very common, is this currently a placeholder for fuel tank systems implementation or a permanent feature?

It seems to disproportionately affect certain planes over others, mainly aircraft with more than 1 fuel tank or empty auxiliary fuel tanks.

Also, are fuel tanks that have been empty prior to a sorty still full of fumes at that perfect fuel:air ratio? Speculation on my part but this would explain why certain aircraft are very explosive.

If a dev could clear this up it would be appreciated.

A bit OT here, was a wing tank, not center fuel tank, explosion fatal to everyone onboard in reality because in the game whenever a wing tank explodes on an aircraft (ranging from a single fighter to a light to medium bomber) everyone onboard the plane is killed instantly ?

Indeed I don't think that in-game there is a difference, which ends up making some planes only the more susceptible to catastrophic fuel explosions

fuel tanks should burn, not explode. Explosions are possible...but very rare. most "explosions" are large puffs of fire like what you see in Hollywood. They don't actually act with any real explosive force.

Explosions are the new de-wing.

Being behind an opponent behind enemy lines has become extremely dangerous. I've lost my prop countless times to debris from explosions or to (mostly) P-51 flaps raining down on me. Hartmann would have ended up in a POW camp long before the end of the war if planes lost large parts or exploded as often as they do in-game.

More like a "Flash fire"..........more of a ker-wuff than a ker-bang.

Roll it back. This is ridiculous.

2 Mosquito sorties, one shot detonations back to back.
3 sorties now, one shot explosion, wing man, one shot explosion.

Half the aircraft are just straight up not fun to fly as allied.

I can assure you, flying as a German bomber/ground attacker squad the fun has long since disappeared. Added to the explosions are the useless AI gunners, fall apart aircraft and ammunition who's trajectory seems to ignore passing through multiple layers such as systems armour bodies addition armour to score instantaneous pilot kills. Unfortunately, great battles has become a fighter aircraft game. Edit I seriously hope that these issues are addressed because it has gone from challenging to fly bombers to suicidal.

I can handle the gunners being a bit weak. I still fly the A20 and Ju88C and have (had...) A good time

Get one shot detontated all the time though

I came back to playing this game yesterday for the first time in 7 months. When playing the first mission of the His Majesty’s Gryphons campaign, for over half of the 6 planes I took down, the engine caught fire after the first hit or two. In the third mission of the Wind of Fury campaign, on 3 out of the 4 Ju-52s I took down, one hit in the engine (which just so happened to be Ju-52’s very first hit) and it was on fire.

When flying a Mosquito in the AQMB, I got some hits by a Fw-190 which killed the radio man, caused my right engine to fail and took out the rudder controls save for the rudder trim. Shortly after I took two hits from a Fw-190 that caused the fuel tank to explode and both wings to shear off.

Something’s not quite right here. On one side it’s starting to become more arcade like, on the other side your aircraft is now very vulnerable.

Absolutely, its becoming boring, unrealistic, and not challenging at all.

I agree some planes are definitely more susceptible than others to being lit on fire and this needs to be addressed. However, being lit on fire really needs to incur some kind of penalty as well as it obviously doesn't matter to most players. I've seen people fly for 2 minutes+, no bullshit and still fighting while on fire. Being able to bail successfully out of a plane that has been flaming for a few minutes also seems to be wrong, as the parachute would very likely catch fire and be rendered ineffective.

yep. its also worse when your AI in single player is so tremendously dumb that they won't help you. AI ignored a flight of 109's in single player, I spent some 5 min with a 109 in some stupid low speed turn peppering him with .50's and .30's waiting for him to explode and the second he gets any appreciable engine damage his AI buddies finally get a clue and chase me off. I drag a 109 back to my furball of clueless "friends" just to get auto detonated when I break in (what seemingly now was futile) an attempt to get some cover.
