[80 years ago today] "• US Coast Guard Cutter Sea Cloud is commissioned. The largest private yacht in the world, she is leased to the Service for $1 per year by former Ambassador to the Soviet Union Joseph Davies. She will be used as an arctic weather reporting and rescue vessel, and is the first American warship since the Civil War to include African-American commissioned officers. Sea Cloud is still in existence today as a windjammer cruise ship.
