Moscow Career in Mig-3 all friendly ai die

I just flew 2 consecutive missions in career mode. In spite of watching several ai planes return and land every ai pilot was dead or injured and every plane lost.

It is mid-winter in Moscow and an unpaved field.

The mission types were attack escort and ground support.

In the first we met 109F-2's and the second, 109F-2's, 110's and He111's.

On the second mission my most experienced ace ai flew home on my wing and after I landed watched him make a far better landing than me.

The mission map also only showed 2 of the flight of 6 as lost, from the radio chatter I think the remaining 2 planes had returned early from the mission, I assume having used all their ammo.

Something seems wrong here?
