VR_Dogfighter Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 So I've been running a Valve index for a year or so and managed to optimise my settings to run at 170% resolution and maintain 90FPS without need for motion smooting. According to Steam VR that's 2628 x 2920 pixels per eye. I've been really impressed with the Index, but just purchased a Reverb G2 to see if I could reduce the screen door effect further. I'm finding however I can't push the resolution in Steam VR as high with the G2. Even at 64% (2528 x 2468 per eye) I am down at 78-80FPS, so below the natural refreshrate of the G2 headset causing stutters. My assumption is if the same amount of pixels are being renderd between headsets, the performance should be the same?
A_radek Posted January 3, 2022 Posted January 3, 2022 Yes this ”effect” was documented by chili over in the vr sub-section a good while ago. Could be a ’native steam vr’ vs wmr thing in the case of g2 and index. And browsing his rather well documented tests it seems you usually don’t get the same performance between different make hmd’s even when rendering the same anount if pixels with the same hardware. Performance between hmd’s being something the youtube reviewer’s don’t really mention or compare. 1

I have the Index myself and have absolutely loved the performance and quality I've gotten out of it. I have to admit that I have been watching people say the G2 is so much better for Sims and have had some thought of going ahead and purchasing a G2. Would love to see how much better you think it is after you get it all setup. My biggest fear about the switch is missing the FOV the index offers, but the added clarity in the G2 might just be worth it.

Good point to check though. 1 hour ago, BBAS_Tiki_Joe said: After you have done some tweaking, let me know how it goes. My biggest fear about the switch is missing the FOV the index offers, but the added clarity in the G2 might just be worth it. Well for your info so far, the Index is still much better in my personal opionion. The reduced FOV on the G2 is as bad as I feared, but helped by either tightening the headband to pull the lenses closer, or using a faceplate mod, such as VRenegetic which I'd puchased on Etsy (although for me not as comfortable as the original as seems narrow for my face). Even without a face gasget it's not as good as the Index. The other gripe I have is the screen seems a lot duller and less vibrant. There is no bringtness control as with the Index either and from what I can tell no other means of adjusting it Then there is the performance hit as I mentioned in my original post. It is lighter weight and not so front heavy as the Index, but I get around that as I use seperate headphones anyway so use them so the ear pads also support weight from the Index HMD. The biggest plus is there is little to no screen door effect. I purchased the G2 really as a replacement for what was my back-up Rift-S to use when travelling etc. but also hoped it may be a replacement for the Index too. As it stands it will be my spare and the Index is much still my favorite. When I put the index on after the G2, my first imresions are wow, what a FOV and wow, the day light looks like day light, then I notice the screen door again. I hope this helps.
