I figured it out. You have to remove the game and its DLC (the ones you'll want on the standalone at least) by going to steam support and selecting the game and permanently remove it and said DLCs. Hope this helps someone some day.

I'm glad you found the answer to your question and even more glad that you shared it after finding it, but I'd like to dig into the statement above. Care to elaborate?

In what way does Steam impact the sim's running performance?

I am not sure about savagebeest, but I noticed enough differences to move away from Steam. A lot of their other games run fine though.

1. Preference to deal with the developer as directly as possible.

2. Steam was just another program and steps you had to go through in order to get flying.
3. VR seemed to be lower frame rates at the time for the same settings and a bit more occasional stutter. Strangely my VR still runs through steam-VR when I play. This only became comparable when I started playing direct through IL-2.

I just re-purchased BoS through IL-2 and now only fly direct.

Terrible.  Stutter for days. While on standalone its completely smooth with up to 4 enemy bombers and 4 fighter escorts plus me and my squad bringing a total of 12 aircraft in a furball with a 98% stutter free experience.

Plus I have clouds at extreme.  It's a no brainer lol. I think it's the fact that I have to have steam itself open while running the application. I think steam is the issue. As stated above all other games run fine.

I would do the same with dcs but I'm not about to delete over 400 dollars in content.

I wish I would have bought the standalone game instead of the Steam version. I don't really have any issues with the sim on Steam, I didn't even think to look for a standalone game, let alone on sale same as Steam. My fault for that but kind of too late now. Maybe next winter.

I had DCS when they went from standalone to Steam. Some aircraft worked on both, some on one or the other. Major updates could scramble things and re-entering aircraft codes was routine. For various reasons, less aircraft codes seemed to work over time, especially if DCS needed to be reinstalled. I finally gave up on it. Still have a pile of aircraft codes, not sure how many of them still work.

Perhaps try turning off the Steam overlay in-game?

There's unequivocally a better solution than buying the game again, although hey, do your thing, I am sure the sales are appreciated.

That's another thing. I feel good that all went to the devs.

I got everything on sale so it wasn't to bad on me financially.  Now DCS is another story.

Thanks for the info, among other's posts here, I wanted to activate steam as I had the standalone but wanted to get the Steam BoN DLC at the steam special which would be R854 compared to the standalone price of  R1701 for me here in SA that is almost half the price, and I do get it, the money all goes to the devs, but how is it that steam can offer the DLC at such a lower price? (comparing the two editions that have the Premium planes included) I will wait for the site to have a sale again however I doubt it will be a 50% off. ALSO, QUESTION: are there any other steam users that have linked the game and now have issues running the game? ALSO, ANOTHER QUESTION: ? will all the DLC's I bought on the stand alone sight be compatible in steam, I know back in the day I could purchase anywhere and the steam or standalone launch would show the same DLC's. and ALSO, ANOTHER QUESTION: If I buy the DLC on steam and link the account then unlink the account will it still be available in the standalone site??

Thanks in advance for your replies

PS how do you display your DLC's below your name, mine are not there> ?

hope it's always 5 by 5

Just realised this may be DCS that I am thinking of with this comment....( I know back in the day I could purchase anywhere and the steam or standalone launch would show the same DLC's)
