nathanhill Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Hey everyone My first post here! I am really keen to hear from other early access purchasers their view of whether BoS is now something worthwhile to get into? I am sure I must be the same as a lot of folks who pre-purchased CoD and are now a little hesitant to part with their cash at an early stage. For me CoD ended up in a reasonable state but the painful journey really meant that, by the time it got there, I had lost interest. Should I hang fire til September release or take the plunge now!? Thanks :o) Nathan
SvAF/F19_Tomten Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 This game is more stable right now than CoD was after the last patch... And a lot more fun I must add. ^^ 1
nathanhill Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Awesome thanks Tomtekopf! I don't think I can resist until Sept! :o)
FlatSpinMan Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Well, it works, so for most customers that's an improvement on CoD at release. I should note that some people with AMD cards are experiencing stuttering. It's a good time to get involved as there's quite a lot of stuff to play with now - not all planes are finished yet, and the campaign isn't in either, but you have a quick mission builder, the Stuka, Yak, Lagg, 109F and G, the Il2, the Pe2 - so there's enough to be going on with, I think. I honestly don't remember the prices. Is it cheaper to buy now? I thought not, but could be wrong. And there's some multiplayer too. Currently it's still in data-gathering mode, so the missions are pretty simple and short. It'll get more elaborate later.
nathanhill Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 Thanks so much for the input. Is it right that the release version will have a full dynamic campaign? Right now its just single missions though?
SR-F_Winger Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 This sim is worth every penny! If youre tight on budget and only fly either side then i recommend buying the standard edition and thenpossibly add the premium plane of your choice via the store. If youre not so tight on budget i recommend buying the premium version just to support the ongoing development of the sim.
216th_Jordan Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Right now its Quick Mission Builder (QMB) and Multiplayer for gamemodes you can use.
kendo Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Not going to be a fully dynamic campaign, though the single-player campaign mode they have promised could be very immersive but perhaps limited initially at least in content. They've said it will not allow you to follow through with an individual squadron, instead it will give an 'overview' of the historical campaign. But it will be groundbreaking in having server-generated AI content so that no two missions should be the same.
siipperi Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Why compare this game with CloD? They have nothing but the name and roughtly same time period on common. Just check what fantastic work they did with RoF and enough said. Sorry, Im tired of threads mentioning clod.. 1
kendo Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Usually I would agree with you but not in this case. Clearly the OP had an experience with CLOD (as many of us had, myself included) that has coloured his feelings about trying out another new flight sim in its early stages. He's looking for opinions from people who have tried it about what state it is in and whether it's enjoyable. Given that I don't think it is surprising that posters have responded with direct comparisons.
Praetor Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Genuinely curious, what is so difficult about a dynamic campaign that Falcon 4, almost 20 years ago, was the only one to do it? 1

Br00ns Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Because it practically put the development house out of business? I'm really interested in hearing more about this, as a die-hard advocate of dynamic campaigns. Any links to more info on the Falcon engine's development and the reasons it put the developers out of business?

Any links to more info on the Falcon engine's development and the reasons it put the developers out of business? +2. Falcons campaign gen was top notch, I mean it still is. So tech wise it definitely should be doable. But (if I remember right) the devs got burned by the buggines of the original release and dissolvement of the dev team. They never got the chance to introduce new plane content, ground targets and theatres like Il-2. A good, responsive dynamic campaign...oh man what I would give for one. Not the shitty campaigns where if you fail bombing one small truck convoy you suddenly lose half the gains your side has gained on the front... Or have to try to re-fly it again..and again..and again. It is nice to have the possibility to make a difference by pressing through your attack on a carrier but failing to bomb a lorry full of pillow cases should not make the whole eastern front grind into a halt..
TJT Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 (edited) If they were to design it at the same time as the sim itself we'd be short of alot of fm/dm depth in the blink of an eye. The task of building a well working dynamic engine is not exactly done with your left hand.... Edited July 14, 2014 by TJT
Lensman Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I've been with IL-2 as a player since the beginning and went right through the horror of ClOD and so I know why someone would get 'concerned'. Right now, this variant is worth the money and is huge entertainment even in the restricted single player mode. If and when it's completed then it'll be the best yet! I'd sincerely recommend a purchase now.
Br00ns Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 @Wind, right there with you. It seems crazy to think that nobody's improved on Falcon yet. @TJT, I'm not trying to minimize the amount of effort that such a project would require - obviously, it would be a lot of work. But it doesn't necessarily need to take away from the work that they've already done on FM/DM and everything else. And if we're OK with waiting a bit longer for the finished product, these things really don't have to be mutually exclusive.
johncage Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 (edited) fully dynamic campaigns ala falcon are ultimately unrealistic and not worth the time to implement. it has a cool factor and is "gamey' enough to be enjoyable, but not the realm of combat sims, but more like the old enemy engaged game/sim hybrids. whatever you may think, diverting from your assigned objective to bomb a carrier instead of some trucks is more for a big budget hollywood movie. nathanhill Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Hey all Just thought I'd post to say that so far I'm loving BoS! Can see it is shaping up to be something quite special. For me its the small details - wheel tracks in snow, flame effects etc and that's without even mentioning the FMs which on the whole seem pretty good! Landing physics are great! :o)
SYN_Haashashin Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Good to hear that you are loving it nathanhill!!
