If I buy the game now, will I be able to activate it on steam once it's released there?

Hello,

First off, this game looks incredible.  I'm very tempted to purchase it this very second.  The only thing stopping me is whether or not I'll be able to activate the game on steam once its released if I buy it through the game's website right now.  So far the dev diaries only confirm a steam release, but don't really go into the finer details.  Perhaps the activation keys we receive from the official site will also work on steam?  On one hand, I do want to support the game during beta, but on the other, I don't want to have to buy another copy just for steam support.

Anyone have any more details on this?

Thanks, and good hunting!

My guess would be no looking at basically every other game ever made. However I have to ask why you'd want to do this in the first place? I am a fan of steam, it's a nice place to shop for games. But it is just that, a virtual store. I'd love to be able to fire up games I got through it without having to log into steam first.

Curious myself on that point as well. I have Steam and its great for the games that work through it, but its also great not having to use Steam. I don't have to launch Steam to launch RoF or BoS, for example, and I created icon shortcuts so I didn't have to launch ArmAII through Steam but instead directly through itself or through DayZ Commander. Steam is a great platform to purchase games and download them, but beyond that I don't use it.

Considering Rise of Flight isn't able to activate on Steam, I'm guessing probably not if they use the same system as RoF.

i would rather not have it on steam even that im a huge fan of steam..when i bought Rise Of Flight on steam i didnt know that i would still to this date wait for the Strutter...

Steam users dont get content on release but have to wait until enough content is released so it can be released in packs..

so for me no Steam..

I big fan of steam, been using it for 10 years, since it was in beta. I have BoS added to my steam library and the steam overlay works with it, you can use steam to take screenshots and upload them etc.

Would be nice to get a steamkey when the full game releases though for the faster download servers, achievements and trading cards.

viking that is not a steam issue, I have many games that release new content daily and weekly on steam. If rise of flight updates are slower it's because the devs are choosing not to push them out.

Hello,

Sorry, but we can't answer now, we plan to launch the game on Steam later this summer and all details about the Steam release will be announced later.

Im not !00% sure but cant you add any game to your steam libary even if you didnt get it there. The only thing that may not work is the statistics and what not

Kerbal Space Program allowed me to change a store bought key into a Steam one, but it was a one way process...Anyway, I don't see why they cannot achieve the same or similar, we're either premium members with everything, standard members as default, or standard with an extra plane or two. Key in the different permutations for key generation shouldn't be an issue, especially at this early stage as we're really not saving too much to the backend.

Rise of Flight was a harder proposition as it had been out for a much longer time, had sold planes and other items as individual pieces, so trying to get all this properly in-line with Steam would have been a nightmare, without the added fact that planes and items are being sold as packages on Steam vs the store. From what I cna gather we're not likely to see items such as planes being sold individually like in ROF, not sure exactly how BOS will be, but I suspect it will be similar to the way Rise of Flight is being sold on Steam.

I hope that makes sense, we will have to wait and see what 1C/777 announce a little later.

Yes you can - I already did this, just for test if DR-2 disk overly over game (useless :P ).

But this dont give you the STEAM conveniences:

Simplified install and updates

Backup of config (Cloud -  if like this)

Bacuck on external midia (DVD/BRD, USB HDDD...)

As an interesting aside, I added Rise of Flight as a non-Steam game and then I was able to stream it to my Linux box, graphics sound etc. I still used the peripherals, such as HOTAS and TrackIR from the Windows computer, but sound and display went through with the loss of about 10 FPS....No real point for me to do actually use it that way, but it was fascinating.

Just had to share when you mentioned this :).
