Danziger Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Just some thoughts to get the creative juice flowing while waiting in sweet anticipation of release for the template.

CraigNT55 Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) Hey Everybody, Thanks to Jaws2002 for showing me the unGTP utility, and while waiting for the P-51B/C Template, I cooked up an RAF mid-1944 custom skin. Hopefully, Raptorattacker will have their awesome template available soon! ? Mainly, I reduced the glossy camouflage color by making a new Alpha Channel layer, made the RAF insignia colors more subdued, and applied panel lines from the P-51D template to the squadron letters and new insignias. Cheers, - CraigNT55 Edited January 1, 2022 by CraigNT55 Added new verbiage. 5 3

When he converted to the P-51 his logo just had the the "BEE". He is a legend here in Boise, Idaho where I live. A big display at the local air museum tells his amazing story of being in both the RAF and USAAF. Plus there's a beautifully restored and flying P-51B (with the wrong version of the logo I'm sorry to say). ? Here's some artwork I submitted to the Warhawk Air Museum. Cheers. - CraigNT55 1

Cheers. - CraigNT55 This picture of Duane Beeson's P-51 shows a very blotching looking camo. It'll be an interesting one to skin. From reading 1000 Destroyed and Escort To Berlin, Beeson sounded like he was a true student of air combat. Like so many other Aces and even those who fought and flew in WWII, he met a cruel end at too young of an age after the war. Edited January 1, 2022 by Rjel 1
Stonehouse Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 A consideration for skin artists (not me lol) - the P51B is enabled for tactical codes so if possible it would be great for things like PWCG if we could get some good blank squadron skins too please

Danziger Posted January 3, 2022 Author Posted January 3, 2022 We need an option to remove that metal fairing around the exhaust pipes. I see a lot of original planes in photos and videos flying without it. It would be simple enough to make it invisible with the alpha channel but the devs would have to put some black space back behind it so we wouldn't see inside the model.
esk_pedja Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 This one is Gorgeous, Hope that some of our skinners keeps an eye on it ! 1
Hien-0_1* Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Hi, I found a better picture of the C5 * K (from the book recommended above!) ... and an airplane from another pilot but with the same coding (C5 * K). I think it's even more beautiful !!!? 1 1

Shangri-La and Old crow both have fairings removed. We just have to figure out how to do it in custom skins (probably will find out once the template is released). Edited January 5, 2022 by Art-J 1

While (impatiently) waiting for the template, we already are able to access the P-51B stock skins using unGTP-IL2.exe Here are the differences between the alpha layers with and without streamlined fairings. Just a pure black (transparent) area. Unfortunately, IIRC, there is not this choice on P-51D skins : 1

Danziger Posted January 10, 2022 Author Posted January 10, 2022 I am also wondering if there is a reason why the tyres are different on the B. The D has nice deep tread in the normal map and the B seems almost smooth.

Maybe a bug : on the P51B5, the normal map (p51b5_2_b.dds) seems to be not applied on its skin (p51b5_2.dds) texturing main wheels with legs and also tailwheel, landing light and some internals. jollyjack Posted January 24, 2022 Posted January 24, 2022 First attempt at a historical one, with the Malcolm hood as one of the errors LoL. Skin just posted on Haluters; + USAAF-P-51B-GQ-T_43_12126_v4_JJ I found some information, correct me please when needed: The first p51 fighter aircraft arrived in England in the fall (of 1941?) and they were very much anticipated by the bomber-crews. Using disposable extra fuel tanks under the wings the new fighters could escort their "Big friends" to Berlin and back to England again. The plane that crahed in Skummeslöv is an early sub-variant of the P-51B, no.34 in the first production series (43-12093-12492). This one, 43-12126 was delivered to the RAF and got the serial FX851. Allegedly the aircraft was used for performance evaluation and test with alternate equipment. On December 30, 1943 the aircraft was transferred to the USAAF and given the code letters GQ-T when used by the 355th FS. 3
Danziger Posted January 24, 2022 Author Posted January 24, 2022 Yeah I'm just going to do the painted skins for the Bstang until the bare metal effect gets fixed.
