Why are explosions so over-modelled now?

Literally, especially the hispanos, everything they touch for longer than 0.5s edit blows up. I am no expert but seriously, wtf is going on? This edit started happening 2-3 patches ago. I am not even exagerrating, except for when using german canon rounds, everything ends up in a huge hollywood explosion every 2nd kill when i'm flying a spitfire or a tempest. It's annoying as hell constantly dying to enemies exploding in front of you. I get that it should happen sometimes, but the way it is now is WAY too often. I get more explosion kills than terminally damaged aerodynamics or fires when it should be the other way around. Why are explosions the NORM now? I feel like i'm playing some arcade game.

Well, I dont know if this is game specific. but regarding the Hispanos, compared to the mere explosive filling, they contain the least amount. They excell in ballisticts (fastest, pounted fuze and balistic cap for AP) ), AP perfomance and frag damage (heaviest round 0.29lbs AP-T and HE-I alike):

british/US M97:

5.44g Tetryl R.E. factor 1.25 (and 2.27g incendiary)

131g in weight -> good frag damage potential

no delay charge

Soviet:

5.6g A-IX-2 (73% RDX, 23% aluminum powder, phlegmatized with 4% wax; R.E. factor 1.54 -> very good blast effect and good fire potential)

96g in weight

no delay charge

German:

18g HA41 (75% RDX, 20% aluminum powder, phlegmatized with 5% wax; R.E. factor ~1.54 -> very good blast effect and good fire potential)

92g in weight (thin walled except for the fuze not much frag material)

delay charge to have the round explode inside the planes structure to further increase blast damage to the airframe structure and damage to fuel tanks and increased potential to ignite fuel.

And late US test showed the 20mm M97 Hispano HE-I not be very effeciant in igniting fuel cells (specialy with the upcoming of Jet fuel)

Well thanks for this data, I never see that many explosions when flying german planes except for when fighting the U.S planes (p47 and p38 ESPECIALLY, the 51 is not that sensitive). It just feels like currently theres just a certain % threshold in the damage model where when you reach that in a certain time frame (accurate aim, so the full burst hits roughly the same spot rapidly) it's ALWAYS an explosion no matter where you hit, engine, or middle/outside wing.

@jdoe33 I must say, that I recently started flying blue in MP and some of my  recents deaths were exploding planes in front of me (Pe-2 and Il-2). I guess its not one sided.

the Me-110 had also a tendency to blow up in a ball of flames. Maybe the have overdone it a little bit with critical fuel cell damage?

I cleaned up the OP a bit. Keep the language tame or the thread will be locked.

Me 110 and even the Ju 88 blow up all the time on me while flying Spits, Hurricanes (both Hispano and SHVAK), and the Tempest. I agree with OP, explosions are overdone now for sure.

also agree. pretty much anything with empty tanks detonates at the drop of a hat. Fuel tank explosions are actually really rare. fires yes, explosions no.

I also noticed a dramatic increase in the number of planes exploding when being hit.
