[80 years ago today] "• The Finnish VL Myrsky has its first flight. Produced by the state aircraft factory, the design was influenced by the Fokker D.XXI and several French designs. Due to the war, the only engines available to Finland are civilian 1,065hp Pratt & Whitney twin wasps, and wood is used in the wings due to aluminum shortage. By the time they enter operational service in 1944 Germany will have provided the Ilmavoimat with Bf-109s, and the 51 Myrskys built will be employed as reconnaissance fighters.
