TrackIR Died. Which VR should I replace it with?

My System is a Intel i7-6820HK CPU @ 2.70GHz with 64 gig memory and a NVIDA GTX1080.

I would use the VR almost exclusively for flight sims, IL2 in particular.  I would prefer to have something that runs out of the box without an act of GOD to configure and run.  Based on what I have read I have narrowed it down to Valve Index or HP Reverb G2 with the possibility of Oculus 2.  If you were me which one would you get?

Thanks in advance for you input.

Honestly, I'd get a new trackIR. I have a 3080ti and a ReverbG2, but I still use trackir a lot.

Wow I'm surprised by this response.  Most things I have read say VR is so much better especially for Flying Circus.  But you have both and you primarily use the trackir  correct?

The day VR is no longer available is the day I’ll hang up my virtual goggles.

Not certain how it would run on 1080, but if the sale pricing on G2 is still on I’d recommend it without reservations.

You'd have to turn down the rendering resolution on the G2 to run it on a 1080. Index is a better match for that card resolution-wise, however one of the nice things about VR is that you can easily change the number of pixels being pushed as needed.

Also I've heard the build quality on the Index is much better than the G2. I've had many issues with various items on the G2 that shouldn't happen on a consumer product. But it is very light and comfortable, in contrast with the heavier Index.

No, I do use VR quite often now for IL2, but for DCS and MSFS2020 I find it difficult to get acceptable quality/performance. And on a widescreen IL2 just looks so much better than in VR. I'm just saying I would never solely fly with VR. And I had a GTX 1080 before this and there was no way to run the Reverb G2 smoothly, even on IL2 unless you are prepared to look at a pretty ugly picture.

I had a 1080 and was using the quest 2. It ran pretty darn well. Now there are some concessions in graphics settings but I could run mostly high settings. It looks good in the quest 2 but the headset cannot deliver the clarity and color of a g2 or one of the other higher end pc only headsets. No idea how one of those would run on a 1080 but I’m sure compromise would be required in the game and vr settings. Now that I have a 3080 I am awaiting the arrival of my g2.

Once I tried vr in IL2 there was no going back. Simply nothing like being in the cockpit!! It’s just amazing.

Yeah Index compared to G2, Index is built like a tank. However G2 wins out in resolution big time.

And no amount of SS on the Index can bring it up to Reverb G2 levels. Native resolution wins out every time.

G2 here also. If you’re a competitive player track IR wins. You can look behind you by moving your head a few degrees. In VR you hurt your neck and back if you’re constantly looking behind you. Still, no VR, no play. You’re in the aircraft instead of sitting in front of a screen. I just did some WW1 dogfights with massive cloud build ups. It doesn’t get any more real than this, despite the lower resolution. Especially open cockpit flying in the WW1 aircraft is a blast. Once you get used to the small sweet spot in the G2 it’s amazing. I had a Rift CV1 before this and I couldn’t read the gauges. The G2 solved that problem. If you can afford it, do and don’t look back.

The last IL-2 game patch improved VR a fair bit IMO with regards to setup and tweaking.  But it's still frustrating if you're wanting to see smooth crisp line art visibility outside the cockpit at medium/long range.

Since the last IL-2 update, yes I would recommend VR in IL-2 with a G2 with a system similar to mine.  In hind sight though, I wish I would have waited for the Varjo Aero HMD instead, because IL-2 and TrackIR on a big curved monitor is still the optimal all around experience IMHO.

I feel much the same way.

But my machine is laptop! Now I'm going to have to get a supped up desktop and curved monitor.  Oh the first world problems I must bear ?  Thanks everyone for the excellent feedback.

I would go for the Index without any doubt.

The reasons are:

- Index has an 80Hz which is less demanding for both CPU and GPU. Having gaming laptop this is important.

- VR devices with resolutions higher than Index will be not optimum for your 1080 GPU.

- The Index with a 1080 is quite OK with 100%SS SteamVR.

- My view: Even If I had the best PC of the world I would still pick the Index because the great FOV, clarity, reliability and performance.
