raizde2 Posted December 21, 2021 Posted December 21, 2021 I play the game (SP career) with no help, sometimes my squad just disappears... I would love to have a key that asks for the ai squad to report it's location: something like quadrant, heading and height, speed optional. Even just quadrant would help a lot. Thank you.
Props Posted December 22, 2021 Posted December 22, 2021 I have thought about this too. Right now the callouts are generally not helpful and just a bunch of radio traffic. On some occasions I have been able to spot and ID the fight callout, but as you have noticed there's usually no "context" for where those pilots are in relation to you, the map or the target. Upon first contact or heading into a target area the callout is useful and correct, but then becomes useless after the fights breakout. I have wondered if these callouts are relative to the target area, my position, or some other central location. Knowing for sure which is the central point would help. I would certainly like very much to hear Bearing, Altitude, and/or quadrant info included in SP as it would make things a bit more realistic and help me to find the fight sometimes when I inevitably find myself in an empty sky after a fight, but hear someone else needing some help elsewhere and I still have some ammo to expend. As far as the big AI furballs over a target area go it isn't really necessary and just so much noise. This would be nice, but given all the stuff that is already on the dev's plate I would imagine this is a low priority idea.
1CGS LukeFF Posted December 22, 2021 1CGS Posted December 22, 2021 I think you guys are expecting a little too much with this sort of thing, given the varying quality of the paper maps issued, the fact that many pilots were not issued maps at all, and the unlikelihood of knowing one's actual position after engaging in combat with the enemy. Do recall as well that one of the major forms of navigation at this time was still to follow major landmarks. ? 1

Agreed, but I doubt, that IRL the flightleader would go on with the mission without telling this. There once was the 'rejoin formation and go on with the mission' command given after completing a ground attack and you still can hear it, when you are flying as ground attack escort by the flightleader of the ground attackers as signal to RTB. It would be nice if this command would be implemented as command to stop fighting or ground attacking and follow the flight on the mission route. 1

When flying IL246 I keep AI aircraft map icons, with my own icon hidden, to simulate what happened when I used to fly online with my squad (until I got fed up with navlights exploit), ie "flight lead, where are you ?" "near the lake in 393". I don't know a way to fly this way in great battles. Afaik, the only game/sim in which AI gives its position on request by player is the Arma serie. In 1946 you would ask and it would give your radial/distance relative to its position. IRL there was usually an obvious landmark to regroup the squadron after a fight, at least as far as the 8th AF FGs are concerned. 1

It might not be like real, but asking ai to give major landmarks and stuff like that seems much harder to make, seems like them reporting the things I said, quite simple unless the map numbers are not in the programming... still I think on multiplayer maps there are reports saying enemy location and the quadrant... so I guess it is... For me it's actually less for fights (those I can usually find, it's more when Im traveling and my squad just decides to fly away without saying a word and when I look for them they are nowhere to be seen LOL

I agree completely based on what I've read about WW2 navigation in the European theater (the PTO was different as almost all naval pilots had better nav training for overwater flights and carried nav boards, etc). Currently it replicates the fog of war and I am used to it so I don't mean my comments as a loud complaint just noting my experiences in SP. A callout for general landmarks would be nice, but once again it is a low priority as far as I'm concerned as I'm sure the devs are busy enough working on other stuff I'd be more than happy to see implemented instead. I still would like to see a minimap in full real SP though as I have been repeatedly unable to use that function under any mix of options in the various settings menus.
