Props Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 I have been trying to figure out the scale used for IL-2 GB maps and the units of measure for the grid squares, but have only come to approximate guesses on this. I scrounged through the manual and forum but could not find any definitive answers for this. It appears that the grid squares may be about 10,000 meter on a side but this seems funky as they are divided in 9 smaller squares so I thought maybe about a 6 mile square is the answer, but it don't seem quite right either. I even tried using a ruler held up to the monitor screen to get an accurate idea from flight line distances in mission maps, but this is not ideal either. Knowing the scale of the map would help a lot. I would like to know the overall dimensions of each map, height and width as a matter of personal curiosity. I prefer to fly full real and use my real life navigational skills and this info would be helpful. On that note I cannot seem to eliminate the map icons for aircraft and would like to accomplish that as well since WW2 pilots seldom had radar at their disposal and certainly did not have HUDS or Garmin instrumentation. Target and route markings are fine markings as they are the same kind of notations I would make on my maps when I was doing recon or missions in the military or when I was learning to fly. A minimap mode in full real would be nice too, but I can't seem to get rid of the fullscreen map overlay even in Custom or by using the HUD or other annoying overlays and cockpit assistance options. I tried to change the map options in conf.ini but nothing changed so I put those settings back were they were, what am I missing here? No pilot would be holding a fully opened map up in front of the windscreen while flying and I always used a 3 x 3 fold for my maps so I could easily flip to the next adjoining area to navigate going back to my recon days. Anyone know the answers I seek?
Schwalberich Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 As far as I know the Maps are scaled 1:1 and one big square is 10km wide and high 5
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted December 15, 2021 Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) To get rid of object markers or adjust other settings when in Quick Mission/Career/etc. at the selection map click on the Realism button to the left of the Start button on the lower right. While flying "i" will toggle the instrument data on/off. "h" will turn off the entire HUD. "o" brings up the large full screen map. "m" used to bring up a smaller map but I believe it has been disabled. EDIT: BTW you can go to Settings, Flight Interface and adjust/toggle on/off other items, for example the transparency of the map, whether to have any techno chat features, etc. Edited December 15, 2021 by VBF-12_Stick-95

I suspect you are correct about the "m" key as that has never done anything but pullup the full screen map for me though according to the manual, and noted elsewhere, it is supposed to toggle between full screen map and minimap. I experimented extensively with the Realism settings as well but just stick with full real now since none of the other settings helped me or are desirable to me. I have turned up the transparency for the map so I don't fly into the trees if I'm low and fast running for home. I do appreciate your feedback and input though. I finally flew online yesterday in Combat Box and was happy to see that it requires true navigation skills with no AC icons. Got my myself killed anyway after attacking the target area as I was to busy getting used to SRS, being back online, and debating whether I should skedaddle back to the barn while I still had the opportunity to bug out. Ahh, the fog of war is exciting!
