EAF19_Marsh Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Very nice! Just out of interest, I remeber reading in Hannig’s book that they were told (mid ‘44?) to paint out unit markings. Suppose quite few ‘forgot’. 1

Just out of interest, I remeber reading in Hannig’s book that they were told (mid ‘44?) to paint out unit markings. Suppose quite few ‘forgot’. Good evening, Just before the BON period of May 1944 to August 1944, a directive for the identification markings of hunters arrived for the western front (end of February 1944 I believe). - Propeller cone must receive a white spiral (sometimes some aircraft had a black spiral on a white background). - Removed the lower cowl yellow color and the yellow rudders that were worn by fighters based in France (JG26, JG 2) and Belgium. Measure applied at the end of June 1944. Yellow or white will sometimes be worn for training leaders on the helm. - Removal of unit insignia around May or June 1944 for all units. Only JG 54, JG53, I/JG3 and II/JG3 retained their badges on the aircraft. Well there was a period of transition and sometimes planes in the same unit had different markings applied. EAF19_Marsh Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Useful to know, thanks! III/54 get their Ds in September I think, but do JG 2 and 26 quite soon after or not until late in the year? In Jan. the 190 units seem to be flying a mix of types.

December 1944, right around the time of the start of the Ardennes Offensive.
