6./ZG26_5tuka Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Meh...are there DB605 engines on sale as well? Bf 109s with Merlin engines looks simply horrilble, the worst thing ever done to them in my opinion Looks like there's lot of restoration works waiting to be donw to get them flying again though.

It ruins the simple lines of the 109, doesn't it?
OBT-Psycho Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 yep, I was about to go get my credit card and then... it's only büchons....
DD_bongodriver Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 yep, I was about to go get my credit card and then... it's only büchons.... Exactly, scrap all that wasted aluminium behind the firewall and pick up some nice Merlins. 1

DB605 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 If you have money to buy and restore even one of them, then you should have no problems to find and buy DB 605 for it if you want. I personally don't understand the hate of Buchons, it's not good looking as 109 of course but i love all warbirds...

Not hating, just saying it isn't a beauty Aesthetical wise the Avia S-99 with Jumo 213 looks more like a real 109, maybe because it has a german engine . Never liked the looks of Merlin engine planes due to the big, strange lookin cooler and boat-like shaped nose section. Edited July 12, 2014 by [Jg26]5tuk4

There's a huge problem with finding a decent 605; those with them consider them as priceless exhibits. I think you'd be farther ahead re-engining one with an Allison like that IL-2 in the FHC was.
1CGS LukeFF Posted July 13, 2014 1CGS Posted July 13, 2014 I personally don't understand the hate of Buchons It's because the look people have come to expect of the 109 is not the one of a plane produced essentially as a clone and with an engine that makes it look a bit like a guppy.

JG1_Barton Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Exactly, scrap all that wasted aluminium behind the firewall and pick up some nice Merlins. If I had the money and the know-how to rebuild these things I'd take the Merlins and find something else to put them in while looking for an engine closer to the DB605 to put in the 109s. I honestly wouldn't be too averse to sticking the Merlins back on the 109s and flying them that way just because they were the planes used in the Movie!
Saleen Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) Get yours today, while supplies last... http://allthingsaero.com/military-aviation/museums-military-history/gallery-five-bf-109-hispano-variants-discovered-after-45-years-in-storage These are Fake 109's by the way; I've researched the original person selling them; The frames are 109; But nothing about the engine is; It's in fact a spitfire engine they put into these things, hence the chin scoop you see on completed models. It is not even remotely close to being called a 109. This one. Messerschmitt BF-109E-7 "White 14" Wk Num. 3579 CF-EML Price Reduced - $3,750,000 http://www.platinumfighters.com/#!bf-109e/c7r0 Look no flames.... . 1954 Hispano Buchon HA-1112-M4L (Dual Control Messerschmitt Me-109G) Pending (This aircraft was actually flown by Luftwaffe Ace - General Adolf Galland) http://www.platinumfighters.com/#!ha-1112-m4l/cmor Platnium Fighters has an agreement with the original seller of the 109 the OP posted; They are only allowed to sell one of them. Again Fake 109's; The 109E in this post however is an original design that was restored fully. P.S. Sorry for the Necro. Edited May 5, 2015 by Saleen
361fundahl Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Wonder what one of those turbocharged 109 engines could do with modern internals, electronics and available fuel octane
6./ZG26_Emil Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I wonder how much it would cost to just copy and build a DB601 from scratch?
[KWN]T-oddball Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I wonder how much it would cost to just copy and build a DB601 from scratch? A fortune, the only way that would happen is if there was an order for at least a hundred of them and mostly pre-purchase. Wonder what one of those turbocharged 109 engines could do with modern internals, electronics and available fuel octane using modern materials and fuel injection i would guess a %50 increase in overall power. if you want to restore a 109 and cant find an actual one then using a Avia S-99/199 might be a better option (if you can find them) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avia_S-199 http://101squadron.com/101/s-199s.html The S-199s would flip over so frequently that the Yemenite farmers working near the airfield got into a routine: every time a S-199 overturned, the farmers would right it with the bamboo poles they normally used to prop up fruit-laden banana trees. On the other hand, Gordon Levett had some kind words for the type: In mock dog-fights, we concluded that the Messerschmitt could out-climb, out-dive and out-zoom the Spitfire and Mustang. The Spitfire could out-turn the Messerschmitt, the most important manoeuvre in air combat, and both could out-turn the Mustang. The Mustang was the fastest, the Messerschmitt the slowest, though there was not much in it. The Mustang had the best visibility, important for a fighter aircraft, the Messerschmitt the worst. The Spitfire cockpit fitted like a glove, the Messerschmitt like a strait-jacket, the Mustang like a too comfortable armchair. The Spitfire had two 20-mm cannon and four .303 machine guns (sic, actually, the Spits had two .50s, not four .303s), the Mustang six 12.7-mm machine guns (a.k.a. .50 caliber), and the Messerschmitt two 20-mm cannon and two 7.92-mm machine guns synchronised to fire through the arc of the propeller.... Despite the pros and cons the Spitfire was everyone's first choice. (Levett 1994)
