Could the visual effects be given the next overhaul from the team?

There is obviously a lot to love about BoX, especially after seeing the latest clouds update, however of all the features that I would love to see getting some TLC is the visual effects.

The three main areas are smoke, fire and explosions which are all....just not quite right to my eyes.

Every smoke trail is deep black smoke, every fire trail is thick yellow flame, every explosion is a yellow ball of bright yellow flame. Please understand, this is not having a go at the game or the team, just a simple request that if possible the visual effects are given an overhaul and a lot more variety seen when any of the effects are triggered?

Just asking, thanks.

So more variation?

I'm pretty happy with the effects myself - it definitely wouldn't be a priorirty in my mind - although the tendency of vehicles to go up in a big fireball could be reviewed I think (at least as an option). I did make a mode for that at one point.

I haven't played in a while but yes, if memory serves me right vehicles all blow up and burst into flames in the same manner. Yes, very low priority, but it would be nice if there were say 3 or 4 different explosion or fire effects and they happened randomly.

Nah. There was an different explosion effect added for fuel trucks.

Also they made changes (due to TC if memory serves) that meant vehicles can be considered destroyed without blowing up at all (destroying the engine, crew or tracks/wheels being enough to consider it destroyed). As example bombing the A7V tanks on Flugpark once destroyed tend to just end up lightly smoking or sometimes do no more than cease firing and moving.

I stand flabbergasted.

Effects could use some love, but the 2d grass, 2d trees, prop discs, and landscape textures need addressing first IMO. Improve those things and IL-2 would look better than DCS with the new clouds, especially 10x better in vr.

I would like to see some oil smear on the canopy, when damaged. Similar to rain but much darker, slower, thicker.

I miss blood on the canopy when injured.

Bullet strikes hitting the aircraft do not look like combat footage(bright flash). I do not know if it’s because there is no APIT rounds in 50s?

I would also like to see the flashes when you hit static targets on the ground. (Buildings, trucks, trains...etc) Bullets just seem to go right through them, next thing you know target is on fire.

I find it odd how bullet strikes on the ground and water become invisible if you shoot it for more than 1 sec (might only be 50s it’s all I really play with). It makes walking your rounds towards a ground target more difficult on top of not seeing effects of rounds on target other than when it explodes.

This game is awesome! I only say this because I really love this game and want it to keep improving!

I was just going to post about this myself. For me the effects are the most disappointing part of BOX. I have just come over from Il-2 1946, and I think most of the effects are better in that game if i'm honest. I don't mean to be negative as in every other area the game is amazing, now i can finally run it on max graphics. The things that I believe could do with a facelift the most are:

aircraft damage smoke - I think it is too thick and opaque generally, also it should fade out much more gradually and last longer

aircraft fuel leak - the same as above really, the colour could also do with toning down a bit

aircraft effects - could do with more variation in the smokes, maybe chosen at random. Some kind of initial burst when damaged and maybe intermittent smoke fire bursts as                               the effect plays out

ground explosions - look too 'cartoonish' to me, need a total rework with again some random variation

ground fires and smoke - if a vehicle or building is destroyed the effect should last for the rest of the mission. Random fire and smoke sizes and effects with different colour                                              smokes depending on what is on fire. Smoke currently is again to thick and opaque and needs to fade out much more gradually and tied to wind                                                     speed and direction. Not all smoke columns should be the same, some smokes should cling to the ground as they dissipate, generally larger fires                                                 burn hotter so that the smoke should rise higher from larger fires than it does from smaller fires.

Yes totally agree with the above also.

Also agree with the posts about the 4K textures for ground textures, and would like to see the ground textures 'messed up' a little as everything looks really pristine.

thanks all

At this point I don't think the devs understand their own engine well enough to make deep modifications to it. They don't even seem to have full understanding of how plane texturing works in IL2, which explains why when you switch to a new plane in external views: first a default texture is rendered on it, and then the proper texture overwrites it. This leads me to believe that only "a low hanging fruit" changes will be made to this codebase until it inevitably collapses under its own weight.

This is not consistent with - for example - the complete overhaul just done on the clouds technology.

I respect the inevitable complexity of the software development work done in this product.

Yes I agree, most of the effects programming is there it just needs updating really. You see the massive improvements made on Il-2 1946 to the effects by people with very little or no programming experience, and as mentioned, if the clouds can be updated then surely the effects are similar

Can IL2 engine smoothly transition from a highly detailed wooden front door to a distant aerial view without a hiccup ? Unreal 5 can, which makes it a perfect match for both aerial and ground-based (tank battles) simulators. No update of IL2 engine will come close to this capability, the devs had a good run with it and made some impressive advancements, but it is fundamentally obsolete technology. It is time to plan for the future: I suggest a small feasibility study in Unreal 5, maybe integrate a single IL2 plane within it, plus whip out a small map with stock destructible assets, to see how it looks and performs.
