I won't say who but recently there have been people who have declared CloD/IL-2 Dover series dated. Perhaps some things like the pilot models are no longer cutting edge, but in regards to many other things and when you look at Mysticpuma's image above, CloD is not dated and is in fact superior to IL-2 GBs in many ways.

And both are great games.

Does anyone know what he's been up to? I know he liked doing scuba photography etc. :)  Probably none of our business - but I'm curious. He certainly had a lot of influence over building the series. I certainly wish him well.

Well... there are three combat flight sims currently in development - with such a small number it is silly to talk about any of them being dated.

There is no universal 'standard' as to what a modern combat flight sim is ... and each of them does some things a bit better than the others.

Are you thinking IL-2 Great Battles, IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, and DCS?

I would also add IL-2 1946 B.A.T.  There is still good progress being made with it by the SAS folks!

Yes, I was just considering the sims which have money from sales being invested in active development. Il-2 1946 (whether B.A.T. or Team Daidalos) represents the efforts of volunteer modders - and if we include those then several other sims are still receiving new content.

But the 'state of the art' for commercially developed combat flight simulators really comes down to those three titles.

I must say I was impressed with the Graphics Extender mod for 1946. It gave the game a whole new look.

There is nuance here. Two apparently have full time development staff.

I almost mentioned it :) I haven't tried it though - the long bug listing thread caused me to decide to wait. However, it is possible I'd encounter no bugs. Maybe I'll try it now that you've recommended it.

Indeed. As always, things are more complicated and ambiguous.
