Avimimus Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 Interesting. So - I wonder if it'd make sense to have a fatigue option in the mission editor? Which would lower the endurance of pilots? To simulate having flown long distances or flying multiple sorties per day?

My ingress and egress are made all the more fatiguing by my wife's sideways looks and constant interruptions when I'm tying to fly. I'm pretty sure that I'm orders of magnitude more stressed, distracted and fatigued than your average WWII pilot was when trying to do his job. 6 2

My man cave is in my recording studio, which is in a separate building, in a separate city and a separate state from my home, but is reachable with a 15 minute bike ride. 1

So much separation...Are you separated?
[CPT]Crunch Posted December 7, 2021 Posted December 7, 2021 It wasn't the flying hours, it was the stress of where he was and what he was doing. Those are light weight flying hours, you should have tried MAC in the good ole days, or ask the guys going non stop over the hump flying the aluminum trail. 1

Oh, I see... all of a sudden, you have a lot of work to do in your recording studio... especially when IL2 GB is being updated, right? I know, it's the truth, I can smell it from here! 2

Have you tried telling her the RIO is the officer in command and going Tomcat? There's also the WWI 2-seaters, though I expect the allure of being the gunner is a bit less than the "wait, I get to tell you what to do, and you'll actually do it?"

Read the story and he relates at least one case where he lost a flight mate on a similar run. Reminds me of Pierre Clostermann recounting his strafing runs. Not only was flak brutal but if you got hit on one of those runs you usually weren't getting out. 1

Yeah, the headaches were probably a symptom of dehydration, the humidity levels get much lower as you rise, and pretty sure those guys weren't packing water bottles, prolonged and repeated your body adjusts to a lower water intake, not a good thing. 1
Rjel Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Reading this and similar stories kinda discounts those opinions about easy ground victories.

I recall the impacts of hydration were discovered by the Israeli Army some time in the 50's or 60's. I seem to recall it was one of the things that let them move troops across what was previously considered impassible desert. So, yeah, I don't think that would have been well understood at the time. I'm thinking you'd probably want to bring at least a quart of water per hour of the flight, so we'd easily be talking a gallon or two for a long escort run. That might be a good question to send in to something like the Fighter Pilot Podcast. I'm sure modern air forces have how much to drink guidelines.
