Zinovy_Kolobanov Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 The season is open, both are easy, what do you think? If someone new comes to learn, which one would you recommend first?
[F.Circus]FrangibleCover Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 For learning flight manoeuvres, the 109 because you can concentrate on flying. For learning the sim, the Yak because there are lots of controls to fiddle with and few ways to destroy the engine. Both then feed in to one of the American types, P-39 or 40 or 47, which require you to be an engine management octopus to operate at full potential. Once you can fly one of them, you can fly anything. 1 2
BlitzPig_EL Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 The Bf109s are easier to manage the engine, the Yaks are easier to do maneuvers in. Either are far easier to fly than any of the US aircraft, except for the Mustang. The British planes are pretty easy as well. The Yaks do require more attention to the radiator setting, but really, just leave it somewhere above 60% and forget about it, and winter maps are a breeze for the Yak, just punch it and go. 2
PatrickAWlson Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 The fact that the 109 does all of the engine management for you is a huge plus. You can focus on fighting. I don't know as much about the Yak, but I find the 109 to be the easiest plane to fight in. Relatively few vices, with control lock in a fast dive being the worst of them. Great climb, so getting above your enemies is relatively easy. No bad habits in a roll or turn. Nothing like the 190s tendency to do an accelerated stall.
[CPT]Crunch Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 109, it has ammunition as standard, soon as its wheels up in a Yak I already feel defensive in an ammo crisis. 1
BOO Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 The real answer is the plane that the other guy is in. How else would he have been able to overcome my honed dogfighting prowess if his aircrat wasnt easier to fly than mine. With better bullets. And more reslience. And my FM is nerfed. And...... 2 1
Robli Posted December 7, 2021 Posted December 7, 2021 (edited) Both Bf109's or Yaks are very easy to begin with for a new player, so basically just depends on his preference. If he is looking for the easiest plane to operate, then it's Bf-109G-2. No need to worry about engine timers for 30+ mins and just have to use stick, throttle and pedals to control everything + flaps and gear, if he intends to land, and trigger, if he intends to shoot at something. In addition to that, Bf109's (starting from F2) and Fw190's have the best cockpit layouts with all (and only) the necessary gauges easily visible and recognizable. Edited December 7, 2021 by Robli

Now that you mention it, the 109's very simple and easy to read instrument panel was a major reason I preferred it in my earliest IL-2 simming days. Having the fuel gauge outlined and the really easy to use compass, and the huge and clear airspeed indicator--those are all very noticeable to novices. This was especially important before head tracking (which I still don't use), when you needed to hit the key to look down, quickly see whatever you wanted to see (usually airspeed or direction), and then go back to flying. Nothing's worse than having to squint and stare at an instrument panel to find what you need. With my current experience level, instrumentation size and placement is much less important to me; but it was certainly an issue when I was just starting out.
