Bossco82 Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 HI Guys, I have not played IL-2 GB for any extended period of time since July this year when I first installed my 6800XT GPU. I checked all my games that week to check compatibility and as far as I can remember it was fine. This month I set up a new LG Freesync monitor, my previous monitor became faulty. So I checked all my games again. However IL-2 GB has developed a very obvious lag and macro stutter problem which I dont remember experiencing before. It is most obvious when flying low towards a town or airfield, proper 1 second pauses and obvious lag. I have spent the last week or so on and off trying everything I can think of but no luck. Its a bit of a game killer right now. Its as if the game is not pre loaded enough. I dont know how many Windows, Radeon, AMD Chipset or IL-2 updates there have been since I did not notice this problem. There must have been a few... My system, AMD 5600x, X570, 6800xt, 32gb DDR4 3200/C14. IL-2 is installed via Steam on my 1tb Gen4 Nvme that has a 32gb page file set. Other games such as DCS, U Boat, Battlefield series, Sniper Elite series and COD series all run fine. However IL-2 is showing a proper slideshow effect near buildings, airfields or AI aircraft like bombers, even just a couple of them. My system resources are not anywhere near maxed out. I checked this in Radeon overlay and in Task Manager. Its worth noting I tried the non Steam install and the problem was exactly the same. I set up a quick mission over Rhineland summer to test this one plane vs one plane. Even with all settings and distances turned down to LOW, 20km and 40km the problem is still there. I have tried a disabled page file, system managed and set to 32gb. No difference. I have also tried it on my Crucial MX500 Sata SSD no difference. Whether all settings are at their lowest or on Ultra and the highest its the same. I have also tried without any Ryzen or Radeon manual settings and I have tried stock settings, no difference. It really is like the game simply cant load textures fast enough. My CPU sits at around 3.8Ghz and my GPU sits at about 65-70% usage for ultra and below 20-25% for low settings. I have also tried V-sync vs Freesync and every imaginable option of any synchronisation settings, no difference. I have also tried it with Track IR on and properly off not paused, no difference. I even unplugged my mouse to check it wasn't that inputting the view in some way, nothing. As a proper 20 year fan of the IL-2 series this is a bit of a bummer. However if quick mission with just 1 AI plane is showing it trying to have a go at a Campaign is going to be worse, it is I checked. Is there something I have missed here. I am hoping that something has not changed regarding compatibility of my system and IL-2 because every other game I have runs just about perfectly.
Bossco82 Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 I have dug down a little deeper with this. Testing a variety of scenario's. Stalingrad, Moscow and Kuban maps perform a lot better than the Rhineland however large area's with buildings still cause slowdowns. These are macro stutters or judders and pauses. This is not a regular stutter at all. On the Rhineland map any area with buildings, and I know they are highly detailed. Will cause these problems. This is independent of graphics settings, even on low with everything I can turn off set to low or off, the slow downs and pauses are the same. Testing aircraft in quick mission. Anything over a 2 vs 2 dogfight will cause slowdowns. With bombers its more. As I approach the aircraft or as it approaches me it skips across the screen in a judder effect. As the planes fly away it smooths and become very smooth again. Again this is regardless of graphics settings. So I can fly on ultra preset with everything on high, 4xMSAA HDR and SSAO over the forest area in Kuban against a couple of fighters with a wingman and its mostly very smooth. If I add a couple of JU87's or go near a building area the judder fest is back. Then if I fly over a buildings area even on the Rhineland for about 30 seconds circling things will clear up and be smooth. However if I leave that area and go to another one the judder is back until I have circled for a while again. Pretty much spoils any Rhineland campaign which is a shame. This really has been the best WW2 flight sim so far. It looks like some update somewhere has caused a loading or optimisation problem, I dont know.
Hoss Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) Don't know how to help you since I'm a nvidia fan boy.. the stuff he does before he gets to the Radeon settings is for everyone. turning on game mode and having it see the games you want it to optimize. https://tweakguides.pcgamingwiki.com/ATICAT_1.html take screen shots of your in game graphics settings, and your Radeon control settings. Otherwise we are just guessing. Cheers Edited December 3, 2021 by 352nd_Hoss
RAAF492SQNOz_Steve Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) Not having a AMD graphics card I can only make some generic comments: 1. It does appear that changes related to a recent update release of IL2 has impacted framerates and this gets some mention in recent posts in this thread Look at some of the most recent posts. I have not seen a reason being given but it may be lurking in one of those posts or elsewhere on the forum. 2. When replacing your faulty monitor did you change your resolution settings i.e.increase it? 3.Jason has mentioned that they hope to release an update shortly with improved clouds. In early test results that he posted it appears that this reduces the load on either the CPU or GPU and better fps was noted. If this carries though to the actual release version maybe we can get some of the missing fps back and hence reduced microstutters. 4. My personal experience recently has been that their has been a negative performance impact from a relatively recent update and I backed off some of my graphics settings to get my fps back. chiliwili69 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 I think it is simply the AMD GPUs, including latest series, they have a performance issue with IL-2 in monitor and VR. This was reported some months ago here. More background here.
Bossco82 Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 Thank you for the replies, I really appreciate it. I was aware of the AMD GPU problem. However I had a 6800xt on pre order since before Christmas 2020 plus I had it at close to MRSP! So I didnt want to give it up. I had not spent so much time in Sturmovik this year as I had been learning DCS. That performs better with Nvidia too but my 6800xt performs very well with it now. As I said I checked my 6800xt when I installed it in July 2021. Everything seemed ok, a quick mission to test and a few missions in my Typhoon Bodenplatte career. The usual odd stutter when the mission initially loaded but it all seemed ok. I have been spending more time in the tank version tbh. When I noticed the Typhoon was available to fly I became tempted to buy the Normandy preorder. So I wanted to get back into Sturmovik more. I loaded the same career a couple of weeks ago and this new judder problem anywhere near building was there. The mission was to attack a railyard and simply diving into it was a slideshow. I knew Sturmovik was not perfect and had occasional stutters but this is unplayable. I did not change the resolution, 1440p for 1440p when I setup my new monitor. The only reason I changed it is because I was cat sitting for my old dear and the cat decided to catch the mouse icon on the screen. Nice scratch right down the middle! I'll post some screenshots of my settings. However this buildings judder happens in low preset with everything off.
Bossco82 Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 Hi here are the setting I tried last. I have tried a variety of them in both IL-2 and in AMD Radeon. Any ideas to try welcome. Thanks for the replies.D Radeon. I spent the afternoon trying these settings. I tried with and without Track IR, no difference. Being in the same space/ looking at building or other planes the game has pauses judders and macro stutters. Basically its not playable. I tried with every "Target FPS" setting. For some reason running 120fps on target while running limited to 60fps in Radeon reduced this effect I also tried adjusting the Tesselation setting in Radeon. "Use Application Setting" was the best result, I tried AMD optimised and x16, x32 and x64. My CPU and GPU are nowhere near maxed out. I checked Task Manager and Resource Monitor, nothing is maxed out not even close. Its like the games ability to use the resources available are limited in some way. I checked the single core usage too in Ryzen Master, you get a histogram graph. The only thing I have not tried is with Smart Access Memory disabled. It could be a CPU usage scheduler problem, maybe. I dont know I am out of answers or ideas. I have been into flight sims since the first I-2 game and all the way back to MCFS. I know the usual suspects when things like this occur. I am lost on this one. Open to try any suggestions. 1
Bossco82 Posted December 3, 2021 Author Posted December 3, 2021 Ok so I spent a couple more hours testing this out, sadly no ideal solution. The performance of my AMD system in Sturmovik GB has fallen off a cliff... These are the setting I have found give me the most trouble free experience... I also have tried ... Fullscreen on and off = no difference Smart Access Memory on or off = no difference MSAA vs FXAA = MSAA much better, I tried the AMD Radeon adaptive MSAA, no difference V-sync on or off = no difference along with every variation of Freesync etc I can think off Every other game I own runs just fine. Sturmovik performs like its installed on a mech HDD without enough Dram installed. It on a Nvme with 32gb 3200Mhz C14. I loaded every test with a multiple spawn at the same location and conditions on the Rhineland map 2x P51 vs 2x BF109. There are macro stutters and pauses whenever aircraft are close and in main view. A BF109 came head on at me and as it got close literally skipped across the windscreen view. Approaching an airfield to land slowly the game literally paused, and hung up for a second before running as normal again. I am totally stumped by this. My previous 5700xt running with a AMD 3600 and 16gb Dram on my 4k TV performed better than this. I flew several complete careers with that setup. I'm willing to try any ideas anyone may have. Open to the idea I have missed something too. The only thing I probably wont do is go ploughing through old driver after old driver, the ones installed are all the latest genuine ones as I keep everything up to date.
