Harlequin Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 (edited) I'm looking to treat myself to something I can use in Il2 but not sure what to get. Looking for a few suggestions, or let me know what you're getting yourself from "Santa" One thing I've considered is an upgrade in monitor from 1080 to either 2k or 4k. My graphics card is a 1070 though so not sure if it would handle the 4K or 2k. Anyone have an idea? Will be a long time before gfx card upgrade with the crazy prices right now. Peripherals/joysticks etc. My setup works really well but is a bit random and takes up space. Sidewinder wheel and pedals (only use pedals for ruddle) X45 throttle, but stick has to be connected (the same x45 I played the original il2 with ) The above work well but it's annoying having the wheel and extra stick stashed under the desk. gladiator mk2 which is great and my most recent addition. And trackir 3 with vector 6dof. rest of my pc was upgraded in the summer, so happy with CPU, ram, ssd etc. Probably looking to spend around £300 max if possible but looking for something that will add to the il2 experience. like I said my setup works well and provides an enjoyable gaming experience but just keepingyveye out for something that'll be good to add or replace. p.s I have an oculus rift, but it makes me so sick using it that it's been boxed for a long time vr is amazing but I'm just too prone to motion/vr sickness. many thanks Edited November 27, 2021 by cosg_Paul Typo
Gambit21 Posted November 27, 2021 Posted November 27, 2021 My 1080 runs IL2 just fine at 4K on high settings/medium clouds. You should be more than OK with a 2K monitor.
Harlequin Posted November 27, 2021 Author Posted November 27, 2021 Hi. Thanks for your input. I think you're right about 2k. Just not so sure how much difference it might make. In an ideal world I'd update everything lol but trying to see what's going to make the most fun change. Is it quite a noticeable jump in quality do you think? (I'm playing on a 32 inch monitor) Thanks
BlitzPig_EL Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 I've thought about a new monitor as well. Been playing on this 23 inch Samsung SyncMaster PX2370 for a long time. I just wonder if it would be worth the cost. I have very limited real estate on my computer desk, so maybe could go to a 24 or 25 inch, but will 2k or 4k be really worth it?

Harlequin Posted November 28, 2021 Author Posted November 28, 2021 Yeah, I think the jump to 4k from 1080 would be great. With sales at the moment there's not a huge difference between 2k and 4k(basic) monitors. Just wonder if it's worth getting 2k monitor now when 4k is really the goal. Just trying to work out how much selling my oculus, 1070 and old monitor might get me. And how close it would be to a 1080 and 4k monitor. Ahhh the dilemmas lol
Ribbon Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 (edited) As i remember i was running il2 on 27" 1440p 144hz monitor with i7 6700k and gtx1070 at max/ultra settings without problem...i even had run Rift cv1 with gtx1070. So i think going for a 32" 2k monitor could be a nice treat compared to 32" 1080...also add some headtracking device like tir5 and it is a game changer! Edited November 28, 2021 by =VARP=Ribbon

Ahhh the dilemmas lol Depends on when you can budget in a new card and when they’re even available at reasonable prices. Might be better off sticking with 2K and higher settings until you can upgrade your card. If you think you can live with medium/low settings for an indeterminate period of time - go for 4K now.
SYN_Vander Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 (edited) Consider a 3440x1440 widescreen monitor with Gsync. My previous card was a 1080 and it could run IL2 very well on this monitor. I only upgraded the graphics card because of VR. Edited November 28, 2021 by SYN_Vander
Retnek Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 (edited) If you're into dogfight and (early) spotting, keep an eye on this important detail: I only can underline what Thor has written: the larger the pixel on your screen the better you're spotting. Training and experience count for it, too. But tiny pixel always result in a disadvantage. Edited November 28, 2021 by Retnek
[DBS]TH0R Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 This is the more recent and more complete data: Since it doesn't cover wide or ultra wide displays, for a desired resolution of 3440x1440 I would recommend at minimum 40"-42" diagonal size. 3440x1440 resolution at 27" equals pixel pitch of 0.1839 mm ... which is hopelessly non competitive unless you opt to run at lower than native resolution. 3440x1440 resolution at 32" equals pixel pitch of 0.218 mm ... which is worse than 27" 1440p resolution. TL;DR if going wide or ultrawide, you need a substantially higher screen diagonal when shopping for that perfect pixel pitch.

BlitzPig_EL Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 it has to do with the size and configuration of my computer desk. I don't need or want something in the 30" size class anyway.

Huge monitors are silly since you have to move further away from them. Why?, if you have a TIR camera on it you need to be 24"-36" from the monitor. I'm using a 32" LG and I move it closer to me when I set up the HOTAS just for that reason. Too far away and your tracking will suffer. Having it closer fills my range of vision better (FOV) which I really enjoy going from a 24" 1920x1200 Gateway 60hz, to a LG UltraGear 32", 2560x1440, 144Hz G-Sync compatible monitor. I do use it for more than games though, and I had that Gateway for at least 12 to 15 years... but it still looked great. And like the other fellow, I had limited real estate on my old corner desk, 24" was it. Moved the rig into another room with a almost 6' gaming desk, that alone warranted a new monitor. Your memory is good, 16 to 32Gb?... running the game on an Sata SSD or a M.2 SSD?. the M.2 being on the mother board and loading directly into the Mobo chipset instead of the Sata ckt. is much quicker. I have a 1Tb M.2 SSD. If you had a later model HOTAS, I'd say try some table mounts, Fox Mount, Monstertech, Predator mounts, DX mounts are some choices. The sky is the limit depending on your funds on what you can add to your Sim-situation. Let us know what you decide.

Remontti Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 If Saitex x45 is anything like the x52 you can get rid of the joystick and keep the throttle.
Harlequin Posted November 29, 2021 Author Posted November 29, 2021 Unfortunately the throttle and stick of the x45 both need to connect to each other to function. It's taken a bit of work to set up using joystick gremlin but the results are good. I've split the rudder (finger rocker) axis on the throttle so that I can use it as left and right toe brakes. And for pedals I've combined 2 axes into one to contr the rudder in game. Thanks for all your input. Going to see what's happening with the sales over the next few weeks and see what comes up. If I go with 2k monitor I might be able to budget for 2nd hand rudder pedals too. I'd love to go full 4k but that would realistically mean graphics card update. Keeping an eye on eBay prices for my current 1070 and what a 1080 or 1080 ti would be. I think it might just be too much of a difference for now. Will see
