Lost 6DoF with Reverb G2?

Hi all,

Had some issues with IlBoX and Reverb G2 earlier this year which had me tearing my hair out in frustration.

The good news is the latest OpenXR update, WMR or Il2 patch (or a combination of all 3) has fixed the stuttering and glitches where it the view would reset every few seconds or shift 45deg out. Now super smooth and silky!

However - while it is now playable I have still lost full 6DOF in that if I lean forward, the cockpit moves forward too - so I can't lean into the gunsight or look around canopy framing.

Any ideas? I've cleared the saved environment, reset the playable space (seated) but that doesn't seem to help. Seen something on here that someone suggests starting WMR, then SteamVR, then Il-2 in this specific order.

Do you have the lights on in the room?

It needs to be fairly bright for the head set to track.

This has happened to me with WMR/ Reverb G2 before as well. I found it occurs if I launch IL2 before launching WMR for Steam. The HMD would normally give you the "Look side to side, up and down at the floor" message because it needs to calibrate itself. By launching IL2 first, in a dimmer room, it won't get this calibration and you'll lose horizontal position translation. Ie, no more 6DoF.

If you haven't used your headset in a bit, or the room is a bit dim.. just launch WMR for Steam portal first, put on the headset and follow the calibration steps. THEN launch Il2.  It'll work no problem.

Cheers - tried starting the WMR for Steam VR first and either that or the latest patch has sorted the 6DoF to 4DOf problem out - but the 'reset view' issue is now back.

Doesn't seem as bad as it was - say a couple of inches off left or right or above the gunsight or above  - but still frustrating to happen and makes precision shooting very difficult/impossible.

I'm a VR noob, just bought a Reverb G2 to do simracing and air combat, but so far it has been working great in IL2. Yesterday, after several days of not playing I jumped in for some sorties and had this exact issue.

Looking left/right or up/down work perfect. But leaning forward/aft or starboard/port simply causes the image to shift in whatever direction I move, as if I am pushing a static head position around. Recentering fixes it (as in centers me in the cockpit again so I do not fall out of my chair), until I move and then it is all FUBAR. I reinstalled the Mixed Reality Portal (Windows app), is that what y'all mean by WMR?

Anyway, after reinstalling MRP and turning the lights on in the room (I forgot about that last night), it is better. I mean I can lean hard right and for a second or two my virtual head is outside the canopy, but then the world/cockpit start moving over with me, sort of a delay now whereas last night is was almost instant.

I think now that I messed something else up in the IL2 setting, I messed with lots of stuff last night ?

Any idea what would cause this? I think all those pilot head settings are irrelevant when in VR, correct?

Anytime that happens best to go into WMR and reset the environment.

I tried several things, interestingly if in game I go to settings, Camera, and I set the limit VR view it is what causes the fast-creep versus the slow-creep. Either way I cannot fly since I cannot even see the gunsight.

I went into the "Mixed reality Portal" and reset my room and boundaries. That did not help at all.

I went to Windows Settings (new control panel thingie)--> Mixed reality-->Environment and hit the clear data button and that seems to have solved it.

Appreciate the help!

Yep that is the one, glad it helped!

Well it did not last, and repeating that failed a second time.

I'm getting too frustrated to mess with it this evening, I know when to walk away and come back with a fresh attitude.

Other than the 3 or 4 hours it took me to setup the 1st time (I'm a 100% noob, less than 75 hours in) this is the first problem I've encountered.

I think I need to try another game, at least that will tell me if it is an IL2 setting or other. Unfortunately I've changed like...everything...in an attempt to fix IL2.

Thanks again for the help, I suspect I'll be back here soon ?

If it keeps happening may be a lighting problem in your play area.

I've identified that the issue (whatever it is) applies only to IL2.

I'm ready to uninstall-reboot-reinstall.

Assetto Corsa (original and Competizione) as well as DCS and one non-sim seem okay. IL2 seemed okay for about 10 seconds...I lean to the right and can see outside the canopy, then the world slides back to be centered.

Make sure your Default VR view and F-1 Camera cockpit view are on the same button or your going to get exactly this issue.

This is an age old problem covered many times throughout the forum.  Someone should find a way to have this pinned near top in VR.  Unfortunately that seems beyond my skills.

In any event, to avoid this problem you should first launch the WMR portal EVERY TIME before you start Steam VR for WMR.  Then and only then, start Steam VR for WMR.  Not doing things in this order will lead to this problem more often than not where the world moves according to your head movement and not the other way around.  You should also be in the correct sitting position where you expect your head to be when you launch the portal.

Yes, but more detail needed. In other words, I've figured out what I was doing wrong...lol.

When you start the MRP, you have to be patient and allow it to load, wait for the look left & right then down sequence BEFORE you launch WMR4SVR. I had the Mixed Reality Portal set to launch SteamVR automagically, that was my core problem. I could tell when loading the game if the 6DOF is working or not by leaning forward or back on the loading screen before the hangar loads. Turn that "feature" off and I only have to deal with the windowskey-Y thing to get back to Steam to launch WMR4SVR.

Patience pays! (and thanks for all the help!)

Ta - I'll give that a try. MRP - move head, then WMR/SteamVR

Hello all.

Just an update to say that my VR in Il-2 is now FIXED! No more loss of 6DoF or the view shifting 20deg to the left/right at crucial times. Super smooth!

Solution was

1) The above - launch WMR mixed environment first, then Steam WMR (and wait for Steam menus to appear in the WMR window). THEN launch Il-2

2) I also followed this guide from the Air Warfare Group - aimed at DCS but might also help Il-2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPCg1JU-ULI

Combination of these two has fixed what was a year of frustration!

It`s enough to drive me to dispair. Am I the only one who is still loosing his 6 DoF. This happened since a short time and I have no idea what the reason is. Before, everything was ok. Currently I am using VR with Reverb and RTX 2070 Super grafic card with the newest driver.

Of course I have read and tested the above mentioned tips and recommendations but nothing was succesful.

I think there could be three sources of error:

1.  The game itself

2. Windows Mixed Reality

3. Steam VR

Interesting is,  that I can play the MS Flight-Simulator VR via Steam without problems.

I would be grateful, if there would be someone, who can bring a light into my darkness!?

You say SteamVR but it needs to be SteamVR for Windows Mixed Reality.  They are not interchangeable if you have a Reverb.  Just checking.
