thoughts on upgrade to Quest 2 from DK2 (on GTX 1080)?

Hi,

I have been using a Oculus DK2 that I've bought second hand about 2 years ago. I bought it back then for a very low price, just to see what VR is like (I've always been on quite mediocre systems, so didn't want to risk a state of the art VR set to find out that my system wouldn't run it). It's been a blast ever since. I upgraded from a 1060 to a 1080 to increase FPS a bit.

Recently I've upgraded the rest of my PC to a Ryzen 5600x and 3600mhz of memory/PCIe 4 SSD. It did give my FPS quite a boost but the 1080 is probably the bottleneck now.

The Quest 2 VR headset is very appealing to me as the price isn't super high and it's a lot of hardware. The increase in image quality from the DK2 will be noticable for sure, although I haven't bothered with the "screendoor" effect of the DK2 much. I don't play online and only play every now and then purely for the immersion factor. Many times I only make a pattern in any plane, land and that's it. The only thing I'm worried about with the upgrade to Quest 2 is the framerate in IL2. I just don't want to give up any smoothness that I'm currently experiencing with settings on "balanced", clouds on medium and SSAO on. Furthermore, I'm afraid the increased resolution and crispness of the Quest 2 will expose the rather low graphics settings that I'm currently running.

Any thoughts on this? Experiences with the same upgrade?

Thanks

No replies, so I guess no experience with a similar upgrade. In the meantime I have played a couple of days with the Quest 2 and am sending it back. The screen is quite a bit sharper than the DK2 but for me there are too many downsides. Setting it up is quite a mess, Facebook required me to enter my phone number or they “would shut down” my account. The device is not very comfortable (heavy).

The sharper image is nice to be able to read the gauges without having to lean forward but it didn’t seem to help much identifying targets. It also required me to tone down the graphics a bit to maintain fps. All in all it made the quite a bit game uglier actually. The head tracking is very nice though and the controller are funny, but I don’t play other games than sims.

So believe it or not I’m getting back to my trusty DK2!

The best all around headset for flight sims right now is the Reverb G2.

You could run it but would have to really lower the resolution with your 1080 card.
