general Q on map texture surface locations

Hi map tweakers.

Has someone some idea how the ME locates the surface related map textures (like town-sand dds files etc), with surface edit decals etc.

I know what is said in Aethelread's great manual, but as i have my game files all placed on another drive than the C:\ boot partition, the ME/game seems to be unable to find the textures addressed with imported surface etc files.

There seem to be no placeholder (shortcut locations) routes set somewhere for IL2 in a users file on the boot drive, as with so many other file rich programs.

the textures.tini file shows places within the graphics folders, but seems to be unable to locate the proper file locations.

They are relative paths to the data folder. So if your texture is data\graphics\landscape\rheinland_au\bla.dds, it should say graphics\landscape\rheinland_au\bla.dds in textures.tini. Full paths work as well, but they need to start with the drive letter and will break for anyone who has a different setup (which is probably what happened in your case).

So i take it that one can put ALL the surfacetex foldered dds files together somewhere on any drive, if they are un-GTP-d,

and create place holders (shortcuts) in the individual unpacked data/graphics landscape folders instead ...

I used to work with large audio files used for sound effect files for video editing a lot that way.

I think it might be too much for the amount of data created for windows explorer though.

ADDED; nope, won't work, as filenames for summer and winter variations are the same.

Example factory_zone_01.dds in the Landcape-Rheinland_wi  and Landcape-Rheinland_su surfacetex folders have the same name, but they are different.
