MajorMagee Posted November 23, 2021 Posted November 23, 2021 Back in the late 70s Aberdeen Proving Ground had an APC painted very similarly to the first/last image of the Sherman you posted. I always thought it looked pretty cool, but I don't think it was ever adopted for service use.
Na-zdorovie Posted November 23, 2021 Author Posted November 23, 2021 wow, thats a pretty cool thing, well i hope it can play its part in your world domination
javelina Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Very nice OP! thank you for your efforts, and sharing!

Enjoy. I've only got about 100 more pics from the museum Continue APG... The poor paint on these tanks makes my tank skins look great!! LOL. HB 4 1 1
Na-zdorovie Posted November 24, 2021 Author Posted November 24, 2021 wow, that looks like a really cool place, i have a friend who owns a combat museum, but not big like these places, all i need now is the air fair lol
MajorMagee Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 Back when I was stationed there, the museum director admitted to me that they had no funding for maintenance and most of the vehicles had been patched up with common house paint. The bulk of their collection were broken down / damaged vehicles we captured during the war that were brought back here for showing off at war bond drives. When that need was over many were set out on the ranges as targets, and the "best" ones left from that is what ended up in the collection. The whole thing was eventually relocated to Ft. Lee in Petersburg, VA where hopefully it is being better taken care of.
Na-zdorovie Posted November 24, 2021 Author Posted November 24, 2021 are you still in the army Major? or what did you do if you don't mind me asking?

S!, It looks like the old tanks got a little love at the new location. https://www.virginia.org/listing/american-armoured-foundation-inc-tank-museum/6058/ & https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g57660-d447653-Reviews-Tank_Museum-Danville_Virginia.html The 2nd link has some pics of the museum. A few pieces made it to Ft Lee for the new Ordnance museum and the remainder went to Ft Benning from what I could find out. The original museum as planned lost out to funding issues.
MajorMagee Posted November 24, 2021 Posted November 24, 2021 They moved the tank collection at Ft. Knox to Ft. Benning as well. They are getting some attention there, but mostly putting them under the cover of roofed sheds. it breaks my heart to see, but they've never had the same following as the aircraft have. I'm fortunate to work next door to the Museum of the USAF now and get to see their large collection of world class restorations. I was a US Army Ordnance Officer (conventional and special weapons) in the late 70s and early 80s stationed in the US and Europe. After a long career in the commercial world as a design / manufacturing / materials engineer in a wide variety of industries, I'm currently back with the government working as a civilian engineer for the USAF.
Skycat1969 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 I visited the Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in 2002. The tanks in the park looked very similar then to your photos; I recall at least one (a Panzer III?) was open in places and patched with steel mesh. I believe the Tiger I had just been sent away for restoration. What impressed me the most was the Jagdtiger in the park and the incredible thickness of its armor. It was also amazing to drive around and see examples of practically every American armored vehicle used during WWII on static display along the roads.
Na-zdorovie Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 been away for a looong while, and was asked about the splinter camo, forgot it was not in there, so a separate one for it, sry bout that https://www.mediafire.com/file/vvrdg4zhwz5gtr5/winter_sherman.7z/file 1

At one time they were supposed to build a new museum for the Aberdeen collection but it was cancelled. From what I understand a lot went to Ft Benning. Now, get back to painting! I need to learn some new techniques from you brother. It's been a lot of experimenting on my part, and as I've always said, I'm lazy S! Junkman, I didn't realize you lived so close to me. Maybe we can get together and grab a beer or two? HB Edited September 20, 2022 by JV44HeinzBar
