So, raise your glasses, and three cheers for IL-2 Sturmovik! May it last another 20 years!

There is always an excuse to raise glasses. :drink2::drinks:

Didn't  have the demo raindrops falling on the windshield.

Or was it just a myth?

Yes, the rain effects were stunning even for today in that original demo.

I remember seeing a demo clip of an La-5 attacking a Ju88...colored tracers, backlit clouds - I'd never seen anything like it, was completely blown away.I loaded it first on an Intel Celeron 466 machine...would never imagine back then what the RTX 3070 machine I have now can do.

The irony now is that you can't run a huge bomber intercept mission like you could 20 years ago in a sim like EAW.

I was also hit by the demo and couldn´t wait for the game to be published! And when it finally came I got it the first day it was avaliable here in Sweden and boy what a chnge from the CFS3 I was playing then! Then came the "2 weeks" series of updates ? (remember?) but still 20 years later it´s at least no 2 on my pc.

It was a great sim!

I remember in the demo, having to use all of the runway to get the P39 up and the slow climb to alt.

But after getting there, it was a fun bird to fight the 109 with!

At the end it was a blast with all the aircraft that were available?

20 years. Hard to believe honestly. Life has changed so much, both personally and the world at large. Some good. Some not. Here's to better days ahead for all.

I also remember the lightning bolts. I miss those in BoX. If they're in the sim, I've yet to see them.

Another thing I remember from the demo, was the escort mission in the 109. If I remember it correctly, there were He-111s taking off from both ends of the runway with predictable results.

On Sim-outhouse.com I saw a Screenshot of a P-47, low over Water - and the trees were reflecting in that water.
Pure Magic.

A battle between CSF3 and FB ensued in my head... and FB/AEP/PF won.
FMB was Magic.
IL2FB.exe - it helped make me who i am today.

I remember this too, and how hard the aircraft were to fly compared to earlier sims. For a long time I flew with no cockpit and had to slow down to 1/2 speed in order to hit anything.

Good times...?

Good hunting,

Does anyone have the first Il-2 demo (the one from before release that was on PC Gamer CDs - not the post-release updated demo)??

Somewhere I have an old pre-release *.mov video and also the official flash screen saver...

Honestly, it is good to start at the beginning... Il-2 1946 (as most people know it) is from ten years after development began - and the amount of anticipation for the sim back in 1999 (i.e. the pre-release version - before they massively reworked the graphics) was pretty intense for some of us. The amount of interaction (with Oleg showing up on the forums) was also pretty surprising.

When the simpocalypse happened Il-2, the Flanker series (which became DCS), and X-Plane were essentially the only survivors... but before that happened we saw this is as one of the the first Russian flight-sims - on a niche topic as well... we had no idea it'd be what preserved the genre - but it still blew peoples minds with the new technologies it brought.
