conure Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Hey guys, I've come from DCS where I primarily play on the Cold War server and people go online to act as AWACS/GCI to vector fighters to bandits / move them into advantageous positions. Does this exist in IL-2? I know there's no single player implementation like in Falcon BMS for example, but can a person go online and act as a GCI?

At the moment, unless there is some 3rd party software for a similar function, there is no GCI in the game. An "Air Marshall" feature is in the making but we don't know the extent for which it will provide GCI functions yet

I know this was a big deal in the UK when during the BoB with their radar stations, but would the Russians / Germans fighting on the Eastern front actually have had GCI stations does anyone know?
Sandmarken Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Mp server combat box has ai that can do all kind of helpfull assistance with the the radio app called srs. Sadly combat box is always empty when I have time to play ??
PB0_Roll Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 GCI did exist everywhere, radar however was in limited use, AFAIK. GCI was using ground and air reports. Leningrad and Moscow had radar stations, but near the front I have no idea.

Much more spotty for the Russians who did not have good communications capabilities early in the war, with many planes not even having a radio, and the ones they did have didn't work terribly well. I do not have a good sense of how Russians did this. Any info is appreciated.
Jaws2002 Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 The Germans had Luftwaffe observers embedder with the front troops, so they would guide aircraft to the targets. Just like JTAC today.

This radio truck was in contact with the local command and relayed its orders to the squadron, using any sort of ground reports, relayed by local command. 1
